Stockton, CA passes restaurant kids’ meal bill

This week, the city of Stockton, California unanimously passed an ordinance that will ensure that the default beverages bundled with restaurant kids’ meals healthy, removing soda and other sugary drinks from kids’ menus.  The ordinance will go into effect July 8, 2016.

This matters more than ever before because families increasingly depend on restaurants to feed their children, 2/3 of restaurant chains still push sugary drinks on kids’ menus and soda and other sugary drinks are the # 1 source of calories in kids’ diets.

Congratulations to the Public Health Advocates (PHA) --formerly California Center for Public Health Advocacy--for spearheading this effort (see the attached press release).  We look forward to further progress on kids’ meals as they introduce and pass similar ordinances in other jurisdictions in California.
