Los Angeles County is “park poor” compared with many other urban jurisdictions in the United States<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=3dd032adf58c8fb45724354189fd90c950e4ddb3270bbe76b247012a08481101>, and areas of the county with less park space per capita have higher rates of childhood obesity and early death, according to a report released by the county’s department of public health. The report found that African Americans and Latinos are more likely to live in areas with less park space per capita.

The average meal at a fast-casual eatery (such as Chipotle or Panera Bread) has 200 more calories than a meal at a fast food restaurant (such as McDonald’s or Taco Bell)<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=3dd032adf58c8fb4096dae9bb156b1ffb33a961c5022783e564c42a7394c593f>, and there are more high-calorie menu items at fast casual establishments, according to a study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. For the study, researchers analyzed the menus at 34 fast food and 28 fast casual restaurants, finding that fast casual entrees had an average of 760 calories per entrée compared to 561 for fast food entrées.
