Subject: [SAFSF] FCFN Virtual Coffee Talk June 9th 1-2PM: USDA Census of Ag & Local Food Marketing Practices Survey

Colleagues,

Steve Vogel and I will be presenting information on the NASS Local Food Marketing Practices Survey via webinar next Thursday at 1 pm. This is the first time EVER that NASS is collecting comprehensive data directly from producers about all the local food market channels they sell through, which will give us a very good picture at both the state and national level of the food systems economic sector.

Join us if interested and please circulate through your networks. Registration details below.

Thanks!

Jim

Presenters: Jim Barham & Steve Vogel,
USDA Economists
Overview
The Census of Agriculture, conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), is the leading source of data on U.S. agriculture. It provides a detailed picture of America’s farms and ranches and the people who operate them every five years. It is the only source of uniform, comprehensive agricultural data for every state and county in the country.
In early April, the USDA sent out the 2015 Local Food Marketing Practices Survey to over 44,000 farm households. This first-time survey will produce official benchmark data on the local food sector in the United States; expanding greatly upon the type of information collected through the Ag Census on this growing sector.
USDA economists Steve Vogel and Jim Barham will provide an overview of the survey, including when the results will be available. They will provide some observations on how the survey results may help producers, organizations supporting producers, decision-makers, and others, understand trends, challenges, and opportunities in marketing local food in their states or regions. For this interactive webinar, participants are urged to read the 2015 Local Food Marketing Practices Survey<https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8uSImUGbYu8UnpDTnpSNXBYNllCY1VwS2MtSjNqYWlKNzFn/view?usp=sharing> in advance of Jim’s and Steve’s brief presentation.
