The trouble with Tom's suggestion is that critical thinking is not applied logic. It's not informal logic either. They're related, but not the same.


If critical thinking is a resectable field, we don't need to hide behind another term; and if we feel we need to hide behind another term, one suspects we don't truly believe critical thinking is a respectable field.


The Critical Thinking Book, ed. by Blair and Johnson, consulting editor and publisher Michael Scriven, currently in the development stage, will help make the case that there's scholarly heft behind the concept of critical thinking.
