Nice job, Steve. Thanks for all your help coordinating and maintaining the new CT category. I guess I would caution against using much more fine-grained categories than this, though. They can become too esoteric to be of much use outside our realm. We need to keep in mind our audience reading PhilPapers/Jobs. Had a brief e-mail exchange with David Chalmers over the past week or so and there is now a "Critical Thinking" area at PhilPapers: http://philpapers.org/browse/critical-thinking/. I've accepted their offer to edit the category. I'll get started developing the category tomorrow (writing the basic description, going through the papers that are already classified there, etc.) tomorrow. Just wanted to pass along the good news. Hopefully this takes us towards next steps for getting CT recognized as an AOS/AOC? All best, Steve _________________________ Steven W. That sounds like a handy way to start marking out a field of specialization. Plus those of us who teaching critical thinking classes year in and year out may find it a bit easier to locate relevant research. Who do we need to ³petition² to make the addition? I manage the categories for Informal Logic, Argument, and Fallacies there and I can say for sure that there is a lot of research on critical thinking out there in philosophy on critical thinking. I see it all the time when I'm doing my housekeeping for my categories on the site. Right now at PhilPapers the closest thing to a critical thinking category is a category called "Critical Reasoning" It has no definition at present but it is distinguished from other sorts of research with 'critical' in the title (e.g. Critical Race Theory') in a way that seems to mark it out as a potentially good place for critical thinking papers to live. One thing we might do (and I'd be willing to do this) is to ask for a Critical Thinking subcategory to be added under Critical Reasoning. Given that PhilPapers is a sister site to PhilJobs (http://philjobs.org/), and given that PhilJobs is used by the APA to do what the Jobs for Philosophers publication used to do, it seems that if the research has a place to live, then having CT recognized at PhilPapers might be one small step towards getting CT recognized as an AOC/AOS. Just a thought. Best, Steve _________________________ Steven W. Patterson, Ph.D. Professor, Philosophy Chair, Division of Letters Marygrove College 8425 W. McNichols Rd. I have a question for discussion: What can we do about the fact that critical thinking is not recognized as an area of competence or specialization by "Jobs for Philosophers"? Many philosophy jobs do include at least teaching critical thinking, and a number of topics considered by philosophers are relevant to what is taught in critical thinking, such as causality, inference to best explanation, speech acts, the fact-value distinction, etc. Bob Ennis PS. By the way Jim, I would rather that you use the address I am using now than the one to which you sent your communication. The one I am using now seems to be more reliable and is more appropriate for the subject. ##################################################################### ### To unsubscribe from the AILACTD-L list, click the following link: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__HUNTER.LISTSERV.
