Comments Needed on Use of Drugs in Agricultural Livestock!

Please consider collaborating with HEN to contribute to the Academy's comments on the use of drugs in animal agriculture. The FDA is announcing the availability of a draft revised guidance for industry #3 entitled "General Principles for Evaluating the Human Food Safety of New Animal Drugs used in Food-Producing Animals."

This draft revised guidance is intended to inform sponsors of the scientific data and/or information that may provide an acceptable basis to determine that the residue of a new animal drug in or on food, when consumed, presents a reasonable certainty of no harm to humans. This guidance describes a recommended approach for providing human food safety scientific data and/or information. The FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) acknowledges that alternate approaches also may be appropriate and encourages sponsors to discuss with CVM whether an alternate approach may be appropriate for specific new animal drugs.

The draft guidance is available at:

 http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/GuidanceComplianceE

We need your comments/input by August 16th!! Please contact Courtney Puidk at [log in to unmask] for more information.

Call for House of Delegates "Key Informants"

Dear HEN Members,

I'm currently seeking a diverse group of HEN members to serve as "key informants" to help me stay informed on professional issues at the recommendation of the House of Delegates (HOD) Leadership Team. At minimum, I'm seeking 5-7 HEN members including a dietetic intern, an under 30 member, a male, and a NDTR. All HEN members will be contacted for feedback on mega issues, but I hope to increase the amount of input and make sure certain groups are represented.

If you are interested in being a "key Informant" on professional issues, please contact me at [log in to unmask]. I also welcome your suggestions on future mega issue topics, ways to improve the HOD, and strategies to support HEN delegate communications with HEN members. Representation on the HOD is an important way for HEN members to work towards the future we want to see.

Thank you in advance!

Amanda Gallaher, MPH, RD

HEN Delegate
