We are honored to be joined by Dr. Roni Amit, a human rights lawyer who has worked in asylum, migration, and detention issues in South Africa for the last eight years. Dr. Amit will discuss the merging of immigration and asylum in South Africa, and the increasing emphasis on control over the protection of human rights.

Student Lunch & Dialogue with Human Rights Lawyer Roni Amit

International migration is increasingly framed as a threat to national and economic security in South Africa, setting the stage for an expanding reliance on detention. This has led to disregard for the law, human rights violations, and an emphasis on control over protection. South Africa’s flawed and overburdened Refugee Status Determination (RSD) process has also largely become an attempt to root out so-called economic migrants as opposed to identifying individuals in need of protection. Dr. Roni Amit will join us to discuss the merging of immigration and asylum in South Africa and its implications for human rights.

Lunch will be served.      RSVP: [log in to unmask]
