What is environmental health? What is the PrIMER program?
Environmental health is the science of understanding how everyday exposures such as air pollution, pesticides, and chemicals adversely affect human health.

PrIMER is an opportunity for minority undergraduate students to:

*         Conduct research with faculty, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows at Columbia University

*         Earn credits for the required research internship (capstone)

*         Earn money for working in a lab

*         Explore the possibility of a career in science

Who should apply?
Undergraduate minority students who:

*         Have prior coursework in science and math

*         Want to gain experience in the laboratory

*         Would like to explore the possibility of a future career in science

How does the program work?
Students are paired with a Columbia University faculty mentor who provides guidance on a research project and serves as a resource for students as they embark upon the graduate school application process. During the program, students will:

*         Conduct laboratory research in environmental health sciences

*         Gain hands-on experience

*         Take part in seminars

*         Interact with Columbia University faculty, graduate students, and other undergraduates

Additional program activities for students in this program who are enrolled at John Jay:

*         Seminars and cohort meetings at Columbia University and at John Jay College of Criminal Justice

*         Presentations at the PRISM Symposium and PrIMER showcase

*         Research conference attendance in the second year

*         Research progress reports (as part of the FOS402 course)

When is the program offered?
This is a two-year program that begins in the summer before the junior year.*
Summers:

*         June 1-August 7  (ten consecutive weeks)

*         $10 per hour for 35 hours per week

*         Weekly events including: seminars, cohort meetings, and presentations

During the school year:

*         Up to 15 hours per week ($10 per hour)

Additional benefits:

*         Money to pay for GRE prep courses

* For 2016, we will also consider rising seniors

o    Unofficial electronic copy of your transcript

*         Request two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to PriMER

o    At least one letter of recommendation must come from a faculty member in your undergraduate program
