As a pre-med student, you're probably used to receiving advice from various people and sources on a host of topics. But sometimes all that information can be overwhelming to wade through. So it's not surprising that hearing directly from those who have gone through the pre-med process and successfully navigated it can be the most helpful. We talked with current medical students to tell us what their best advice would be for any aspiring physician.

The AAMC believes that the costs of applying to medical school should not be a barrier for someone to pursue their dream of becoming a physician. To help those who would be unable to apply to medical school without financial assistance, the AAMC's Fee Assistance Program (FAP) offsets some of the costs associated with the application process. The 2016 Fee Assistance Program application will close on December 16, 2016 and the 2017 application will open January 4, 2017. We encourage you to learn more about the program and apply early to make sure your benefits are available when you are ready to register for the MCAT exam or submit your application to medical school.

Growing up, Ross McKinney, MD always knew he was going to be an academic. Inspired in high school to pursue a career in medicine, it wasn't until a ward rotation in his second year of his pediatric residency that he understood what he really wanted to do. This ultimately led him to discover a career in pediatric HIV research.
Dr. McKinney currently serves as the chief scientific officer at the AAMC.
