Summer Undergraduate Research in Physiology (SURP) program to

Promote Diversity of Future Scientists

Overview

The SURP program provides undergraduate students with experience in biomedical research under the direct mentorship of University of Michigan Medical School faculty.  The program is funded by a NIH R25 grant in collaboration with other existing programs at the University of Michigan.

During the 12-week program, students work closely with faculty mentors on projects related to the mission of National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and will attend a weekly Physiology Seminar Series.

Students from underrepresented groups and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in ultimately pursuing research at the Ph.D. level in graduate school are encouraged to apply.

The SURP program provides a stipend ($4200), housing assistance ($1000), travel assistance (up to $500), and research supply fund ($1000).

The program for 2017 starts on May 30, and ends on August 18.

Research

SURP offers summer experience with investigators involved in the following areas of research:

- Cardiovascular biology;

- Cerebrovascular biology and    Pulmonary sciences;

- Circadian rhythms and sleep sciences.

The summer program provides students with an academic experience similar to that of an entry-level graduate student.  Interns will gain basic knowledge in modern physiology, hands-on laboratory research experiences, and practical skills in preparing scientific abstracts, posters, and oral presentations.

Admission Requirements

Undergraduate students who have completed 1-3 years of college by the time of their internship are qualified to apply.  Students who have successfully completed SURP program in previous years are encouraged to apply, provided that their mentors agree to accept them into their labs again.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with minimum overall GPA of 3.0.   Letters of support are required.

Students from racial and ethnic minority groups or low-income family backgrounds or who are first-generation college students are especially encouraged to apply.

Application Process

Interested students must complete an online application.  The application is due in February 1, 2017.  Details of the program can be found at: https://sites.google.com/a/umich.edu/surp.
