I wasn’t planning to comment on this thread, but all this intra-disciplinary hairsplitting makes me despair of AILACT. Why not instead seek to broaden our scope to the real-life world of public argument and debate, as in the resolutions by the National Council of Teachers of English in the 1970s calling for a “new literacy” centered on fostering “the critical reading, listening, viewing, and thinking skills necessary to enable students to cope with the persuasion techniques in political statements, advertising, entertainment, and news”?

To abdicate this larger disciplinary responsibility in today’s political climate amounts to sheer dereliction of duty.

An argument can be used to support (justify) a proposition or to support or attack another argument.
