Why Is Interest In Global Health Booming?
The world is more interconnected than ever before and with that, the health of people everywhere is of growing concern to us all. Diseases do not respect boundaries and countries throughout the world are more diverse than they were even a decade ago. Students
focus on global health for a variety of reasons, including to have a real impact as a medical practitioner attuned to social justice issues, to gain experience working with diverse communities around the world, to work effectively with underserved populations
and to study medicine alongside other disciplines such as epidemiology, sociology and ethics. Global health practitioners are needed locally and internationally.
Alumni Spotlights: Serving Both Domestic & International Communities
Katherine (Kate) Horan, MD is in
the Ivory Coast on her fourth mission with Doctor Without Borde rs.
After completing her Pediatrics residency at Baystate Medical Center, Kate fulfilled her life-long dream and joined Doctors Without Borders as a pediatrician. Over the past 2 years she has served as the managing physician in a malaria and malnutrition ward
in rural Chad, director of a refugee camp hospital in South Sudan and technical advisor for a 300 bed pediatric hospital in Mali. Her current mission in the Ivory Coast involves the implementation and advancement of global neonatology protocols.
LeShawn Worsley-McIver, MD, MPH
is currently the Senior Vice President of Government Affairs & Advocacy at the American Diabetes Association. During her fourth year
clerkship in Kenya, LeShawn observed the large number of patients being seen far too late in the progression of their illnesses. She thought about ways of using her medical background, skills and interests to prevent the spread of diseases and assuage their
progression while also addressing the systemic inconsistencies in patient care.
“You can’t be afraid to follow the right path for you,” LaShawn shared. Exploring the less-traveled road led her to the American Diabetes Association. During her six-year tenure at the Association, LaShawn has worked alongside local, state and federal government
agencies to develop and strengthen public policy affecting people with diabetes. She thrives on driving population based strategies and influencing public policy initiatives that touch millions of lives.

Last month, the Class of 2017 celebrated their graduation in front of a crowded auditorium of well-wish ers
including family, peers, MSIH administration and academic staff. Graduates were recognized for many honors. Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) recipients from the Class of 2017 were: Dr. Amit Ringel (residency University of North Carolina), Dr. Elizabeth
Wiser (residency Heritage Valley Family Medicine), Dr. Jayne Shadlyn (residency University of Virginia), Dr. Kristie Hadley (residency University of North Carolina), Dr. Joshua Kugler (residency Winthrop-University Hospital), and Dr. Virginia Byron (residency
Tulane University School of Medicine). GHHS recognizes students, residents and faculty who are exemplars of compassionate patient care and who serve as role models, mentors, and leaders in medicine.
MSIH Admissions Update:
MSIH is the world's first and only medical school to incorporate core global health courses into all four years of an M.D. program.
At MSIH, students learn not only to be doctors, but also skilled physicians with a comprehensive view of health around the world. A
humanistic approach to community health begins with weekly Global Health and Medicine clinic days in the first and second year. An English-language track at Ben-Gurion University, MSIH has been affiliated with Columbia University's College of Physicians and
Surgeons since inception.
We are gearing up to begin accepting applications for MSIH's entering class of 2018. The
