The Epilepsy and Cognition Laboratory Research Assistant Application

The Epilepsy and Cognition Laboratory studies the mechanisms of, and treatments for, cognitive deficits in the setting of epilepsy. Studies assess the characteristics of electrical abnormalities on electroencephalography (EEG) that may predispose to disruption of memory formation, examine how electrical abnormalities may interfere with normal EEG signals of memory encoding, and determine the effects of abnormal discharges during sleep on various types of memory. We are developing MATLAB-based tools to characterize abnormalities on EEG, as well as methods to automate their detection. Studies employ various methods, including eye tracking, neuropsychological testing, scalp EEG, and intracranial EEG. The Epilepsy and Cognition Laboratory represents a collaborative effort across the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System, New York University (NYU) Langone Health, the NYU Department of Psychology, and the Tandon School of Engineering.

Interns will have the opportunity to:

·        Gain research experience relevant to graduate school and medical school

·        Earn letters of recommendation

·        Develop skills related to subject recruitment, subject testing, data entry, and IRB protocol preparation

·        Co-author manuscripts and conference presentations

·        Earn course credit

Students may be trained to conduct cognitive testing, place EEG electrodes, and perform phlebotomy. They may also use SPSS, MATLAB, and other specific stimulus presentation programs. Applicants should have some background in research, such as relevant coursework, past publications, data management, and/or lab experience. A one semester commitment is requested.
