Disabled Independence

"Historically, people with significant intellectual disabilities who require constant and enduring support have been considered dependent, helpless, and childlike. However, modern social services seek to work against this view and seeks to give them some independence. In the movement to overcome this myth of “eternal childhood” through a rigorous push for acknowledgement of young people with intellectual disabilities as non-children, there is a chance that essential developmental and support processes inherent in the transitional phase between childhood and adulthood have been overlooked."
