Careers In Global Health:  The possibilities are endless

Global health is a field that is rapidly expanding, as interest in global health has never been
higher.  Global health is unique and different than both public and international health.  The focus of global health is on improving health and achieving equality in health for all people worldwide.  Global health is concerned with individual curative healthcare, in addition to population health and prevention.  The focus is domestic, as well as international, transcending national boundaries.  Global health careers are as diverse as the patients served and global health practitioners are needed locally and internationally.

The Medical School for International Health (MSIH) at Ben-Gurion University of the
Negev (BGU) is a unique medical school that incorporates global health components into all four years of the core M.D. curriculum.  MSIH has been affiliated with Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons since inception and our program takes an integrated approach to global health and cross-cultural medicine.  At MSIH, you learn not only to be a doctor, but also to be a skilled physician with a comprehensive view of health around the world.

Graduates of MSIH enjoy high match rates parallel to those of students at top medical schools in the U
.S. (90% in 2017).  An M.D. from MSIH offers a clear path to U.S. residency and students gain the training necessary to practice medicine while meeting the challenges of global health — and make a real impact.  Graduates are highly trained physicians who understand how to work at the intersection of global health and community and preventive medicine.  MSIH alumni practice medicine worldwide.

Alumni Spotlight: What are MSIH alumni doing in the field of global health?

Over 50% of MSIH alumni are involved in global health work after residency.  They practice in the U.S., Canada and across the globe.  They are professors and practitioners.  They are involved in healthcare public policy. They work in hospitals, clinics and private practices, as well as with Doctors Without Borders and the CDC.  Here is a glimpse of some of the great work they are doing:

Javeed Sukhera, M.D. (2007), Academic Director for the Global Health Curriculum at Schulich School of Medicine at Western University in Ontario.
D
r. Sukhera is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Paediatrics at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University in Ontario where he is also the Senior Designate Physician Lead for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC). He provides clinical consultation to the Child and Adolescent Mental Healthcare Program,  Paediatric Chronic Pain Program and Transcultural Mental Health Program.  He is the keynote speaker for this year's White Coat Ceremony at MSIH.

Brita Almog, M.D., M.A. (2007), Medical Director and General Pediatrician, San Mateo Medical Center
Dr. Alomg oversees the work of adult and pediatric primary care and specialty provide
rs at San Mateo Medical Center, a public health delivery system that provides care to the vulnerable, underserved and uninsured in San Mateo County, part of the San Francisco metropolitan area.

Rachel Pope, M.D., MPH (2011),  Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor Medical College in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Pope recently completed a two-year fellowship in Malawi, where she learned how to repair obstetric fistulas, and worked with the next generation of Malawian residents at the newly created Malawian OB/GYN residency program.   She currently spends the majority of her time in Malawi.
