LGBTQ Employees & Discrimination: Title VII, Changes and Challenges
The LGBT Social Science and Public Policy Center is hosting an event that will explore the recent changes in DOJ guidance on employment non-discrimination and Title VII, and the implications for LGBTQ individuals, especially for transgender people. Speakers will include Ryan Thoreson, Researcher with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights Program at Human Rights Watch and Rosemary DiSavino, Senior Trial Attorney in the Newark Area Office of the New York District Office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) with over 20 years of experience litigating employment discrimination cases. TRANSGENDER PEOPLE IN THE MILITARY: A Conversation with the ACLU's CHASE STRANGIO
Chase Strangio, American Civil Liberties Union staff attorney, in conversation with Charles Kaiser, associate director of the LGBT Social Science & Public Policy Center at Hunter College, will discuss the ACLU's pending case against the Pentagon that challenges its new ban on military service by men and women who are transgender. Strangio, a member of the ACLU's LGBT & HIV Project, has also been the lawyer for Chelsea Manning and part of the legal team representing Gavin Grimm at the Supreme Court. His work includes impact litigation, as well as legislative and administrative advocacy, on behalf of LGBTQ people and people living with HIV across the U.S. He has particular expertise on the treatment of transgender and gender non-conforming people in police custody, jails, prisons and other forms of detention. Kaiser is the author of three books, including The Gay Metropolis. New York City Council Speaker Candidate Forum: Focus on Cis & Trans Women and Non-Binary New Yorkers
The next Speaker of the NYC Council has an essential role to play in ensuring that women and non-binary individuals-particularly those of color-thrive. Join this panel at Roosevelt House with current Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito to learn more about how Speaker candidates will continue to push a policy agenda that uplifts all. The discussion will be co-moderated by Laura Nahmias of Politico and Shatia Burks of Young Women's Advisory Council and NYC Young Women's Initiative. See more info in the flyer attached.
