A few times each month during the fall semester, a group of first-year students at the Perelman School of Medicine spend their day observing works of art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art instead of in the classroom. No, these students aren't simply taking a break to enjoy the museum; they are enrolled in a class called "Art, Observation, and Empathy," where they learn to build their observation and communication skills through art.

Increasingly, students are taking time off after their undergraduate programs before entering medical school. Often this time is spent strengthening one's application with additional coursework, studying for the MCAT exam, or gaining medicine-related experience. One way to make the most of this time and gain real-world experience while working in the community is to take a service year.
