Are you interested in being a part of the future of healthcare? Join other college students interested in pursuing a career in medicine for a summer of service in a hands-on, dynamic hospital setting.

As a volunteer in the NYP Brooklyn Methodist Summer College Intensive Program (SCIP)<http://%20http:/www.nyp.org/brooklyn/volunteer-opportunities/volunteer-programs/summer-college-intensive-program> you can gain direct patient care experience and exposure to unique educational opportunities that will enrich your understanding of healthcare.

Our Mission

SCIP enables highly qualified college students to communicate directly with patients, offering support and assistance during their hospitalization. SCIP volunteers enhance the quality of care patients receive and become an integral part of the healthcare team. In addition, SCIP seeks to augment the education of future healthcare practitioners by immersing them in real world healthcare situations, and guiding them to become competent, compassionate healers.

SCIP Activities

As a SCIP participant, you will have:

  * Direct interactions with patients and professional staff
  * Weekly group discussions based on thoughtfully curated articles in public health and humanistic medicine and volunteers' written reflections
  * Lectures by leading healthcare practitioners
  * Networking opportunities with fellow SCIP participants
  * The opportunity for a more extensive experience, with additional shifts available in the Resident Evaluation Project<http://www.nyp.org/brooklyn/volunteer-opportunities/volunteer-programs/resident-evaluation-project> and other special projects

Program Requirements

  * The program runs Monday through Thursday, from June 4, 2018 through August 2, 2018. Interested participants may extend their service through the month of August.
  * SCIP volunteers must commit to giving 16 hours of patient care service each week (with a minimum of 135 hours of service. Because this is a highly structured and scheduled program, students will not be granted any time off.)

  * All participants must be available to volunteer Mondays through Thursdays.

  * In addition, there are several other training sessions required for specific placements.
