There is an exciting and immediate opportunity to serve as the Research Technician (EKG Technician and Lab Coordinator) at Columbia University Medical Center/The New York State Psychiatric Institute. The role involves such tasks as performing EKGs on the 3 inpatient units of the hospital; preparing samples from the inpatient units and outpatient clinics to send to the off-site laboratory and organizing lab results; having daily patient contact; and working alongside experienced physicians, residents, medical students, nurses, social workers, clinical psychologists, and research assistants gaining exposure to the many facets of psychiatric care and clinical research. 

 

This position provides relevant training and experience for students and recent graduates intending to apply to medical schools, MD/PhD programs, PA schools, and other graduate schools.

Research Technician

Job Description

                    EKG Technician and Laboratory Coordinator at the New York State Psychiatric Institute

                    Performing EKGs on the 3 inpatient units of the hospital

                    Preparing samples from the inpatient and outpatient clinics to send to the off-site laboratory and organizing lab results

                    Carrying a pager to respond to urgent EKG requests and critical lab results that must be brought to the attention of the treating physician

                    75% salaried position, you may use your free 25% to have a research position at a clinic, study for the MCAT, volunteer, etc

Clinical Experience

                    Learn how a psychiatric hospital operates and what it is like to be a health care worker on a daily basis

                    • Have patient contact everyday

                    Meet and work alongside experienced doctors, residents, medical students, nurses, social workers, clinical psychologists, and research assistants gaining exposure to the many facets of psychiatric care and clinical research

                    Attend Grand Rounds lectures, clinical case conferences, and clinical meetings

                    Excellent clinical experience to talk about in graduate school applications and potential to have an additional letter of recommendation
