Abstract:

In addressing the aims of education, many philosophers have highlighted the promotion of rationality and many have highlighted the promotion of democracy.  These aims are closely interrelated.   Drawing on my book Reasoning, Argumentation, and Deliberative Democracy, I argue that education should promote deliberative democracy, an ideal form of democracy grounded in argumentation, which is central to both rationality and democracy.  Education for deliberative democracy engages students in argumentation under conditions of intellectual freedom to promote the development of rational social competencies and associated values, virtues, and commitments.
