Jay Baker was one of three executives who did a leveraged buyout of the Kohl's Department Stores from its British owner, BATUS, in 1986. The trio turned Kohl's from a local chain into a fast-growing powerhouse. At Jay’s retirement as president of Kohl's Corp. in 1999, the company had grown into a $5 billion corporation with more than 54,000 employees and 300 stores. Jay Baker’s roots in retail include his father’s wholesale thread business in Manhattan’s garment district and his mother’s small millinery shop in Queens.
