General Description:

Qualitative Research Scientist/Associate



The Barry Commoner Center for Health and the Environment (Commoner

Center) is an occupational and environmental research institute at

Queens College, CUNY located on the Queens College campus in

mid-Queens. It is also an affiliated research center of the CUNY

School of Public Health.



The Commoner Center seeks a qualitative research scientist/associate.

This person will work on one or more community-based participatory

research projects that investigate the health and well-being of Latino

immigrant workers in NYC with a focus on health impacts of workplace

exposures. This person will design and implement qualitative

components of community-based research studies, including assisting in

partnership development and managing recruitment activities,

collecting and overseeing the collection of data, designing and

leading data analysis, and writing up findings.



The person will also assist with the development and implementation of

project evaluation activities. We expect data collection to take place

through focus groups, key informant interviews and the

University-Community partnership process. As data analysis will be

conducted as a team, familiarity and experience with a qualitative

data management software program (e.g., Dedoose, NVivo, or ATLAS.ti)

and with team analysis is preferred. It is anticipated that much of

the data collection and analysis will require Spanish proficiency.



Other Duties:

She or he will assist in coordination of reporting documents to

project funding agencies, submit IRB protocols and ensure timely IRB

amendments and renewals as needed, and oversee project

interns/students who will assist in data collection and analysis.  She

or he will also assist in the coordination of project and workgroup

meetings across project partners and other local and national

collaborators. This person will work closely with Project Directors,

other project coordinators, Latino immigrant community organizations

and other personnel. This person will report to the Project Directors.


Salary:$50,000 - $75,000

Core Competencies/Qualifications:

Requirements:



Must have public health PhD or other relevant graduate degree in

qualitative research; Master level training will be considered if the

candidate has had previous research experience including working

knowledge of qualitative data collection and analysis and familiarity

with project evaluation theory and design.



The prospective candidate must be able to work in a team and have

excellent writing skills. Experience working with community based

organizations is preferred. Ability to conduct and analyze focus group

and key informant interviews in Spanish is required.



Salary is commensurate with experience.



Full-time position; some flexibility in hours.
