 The New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH) is seeking a communications director who will be responsible for NYCOSH’s communications program.  The director will be responsible for writing press releases, handling press contacts, producing a quarterly newsletter and a weekly electronic news update, and producing promotional and educational safety and health materials.  In addition, the director will regularly update NYCOSH’s web site.  Candidate must be a self-starter, able to work independently, and have a demonstrated record of successful press work.



NYCOSH is a membership organization of workers, unions, community-based organizations, and workers’ rights activists. NYCOSH uses training, education, advocacy, technical assistance, and organizing to improve health and safety conditions in our workplaces, our communities, and our environment. Founded 35 years ago on the principle that workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths are preventable, NYCOSH works to extend and defend every person’s right to a safe and health workplace and community.



Responsibilities:
?         Media Relations: Act as liaison with print and broadcast media.  Responsible for promoting NYCOSH work through press releases, press conferences, public service announcements, and through original articles published in both the labor and mainstream press.  Also responsible for arranging appearances by NYCOSH board and staff on television and radio.
?         NYCOSH Newsletter:  Write and edit “Safety Rep”, the organization’s quarterly newsletter; and produce weekly “NYCOSH Newsline” email update
?         Educational and Promotional Materials:  Write and/or edit handbooks, fact sheets and other materials produced by NYCOSH; and oversee production.  Write and edit production brochures, annual reports, posters, grants and fundraising materials and other materials.
?         Web Site: Update and produce materials for NYCOSH web site in coordination with NYCOSH web developer.
?         Investigative Projects: Conduct various investigations of corporation’s safety and health records to be utilized in NYCOSH.
?         Public Events: Promote NYCOSH forums and educational meetings through media outreach and social media.



Qualifications:
?         Excellent written and oral communication skills.
?         Excellent research and investigative skills.
?         Experience developing and implementing a public affairs program.
?         Experience working as a professional editor and writer, either for a labor or mainstream press.
?         Computer literate; data base skills a plus.
?         Familiarity with the labor movement, workplace and environmental health issues.
?         Track record of placing successful stories.



Preferred Qualifications:

?         Experience with social media, including Facebook and Twitter

?         Fluency in both English and Spanish, both orally and written



Salary: $73,195-78,195; health and dental benefits; life insurance; pension
