Suspicious devices abound

From May 1st through May 3rd Hunter College's Black Box will house a
plethora of "suspicious devices" rendered in a variety of media by multiple
artists as part of a limited engagement art exhibit. More that 30 artists
from all over the country and the world will participate in the event, If
You See Something, Say Something.

With a range of work will include new media, installations, film and video,
photography, painting, and journalistic projects, covering topics that
include inhumane treatment, free education in New York City, and popular
contemporary visual culture, the artists invite visitors/viewers to become
actively engaged on multiple levels—culturally, emotionally, intellectually,
historically, and socially. The "suspicious devices" particularly lend
themselves to this multi-level engagement.

Conceptualized by New York based Stuart Ewen, suspicious devices,
recognizing and reflecting the diversity of audience and issues, are subject
to varied interpretations and are intended to make connections between the
audience and important social issues. Ewen's own situationist tribute to
abstract expressionism subverts conventional notions of traditional painting
and its formal presentation. Digital artist and graphic designer Robin Locke
Monda contributes a purple gel sealed in an easily concealed, molded plastic
capsule labeled in such a way as to make us think about our habits as
consumers. Interdisciplinary artist, Millie Burns, incorporates graphics and
text in a familiar format to challenge our reactions to and notions of
"otherness" and to encourage a dialog about cultural sensitivity.

Department's Integrated Media Arts Program at Hunter College of the City
University of New York (IMA/MFA), and EYEspeak (a graduate student
association).
