The artificial sweeteners sucralose, aspartame and saccharine are "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) by the FDA, but the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) says aspartame and saccharine should be avoided. It also gave stevia a "caution" rating, saying, "Just because a substance is natural does not mean that it is safe." The scientific literature offers conflicting findings on the safety of the substances.
