Sugary drinks are an important target in the fight against obesity, and much progress has been made in the past several years to reduce consumption. But, we can’t rest yet. She will then update nutrition professionals on the wide variety of policies that are being implemented to reduce consumption, give suggestions for how we can work with community groups to promote strong policies and answer additional questions.

Food deserts and food access are current buzz words in community and public health nutrition. However, access to healthy foods goes beyond frequency and location of grocery stores and presence of public transportation.
In this webinar, Dr. Marsha Spence, Research Assistant Professor and Assistant Director, Public Health Nutrition Program at the University of Tennessee, will discuss the steps of conducting a collaborative community nutrition-related needs assessment, the use of novel technologies in completing assessments, and informing key stakeholders of assessment findings.
Randa Meade, Graduate Student and Maternal and Child Health Nutrition Trainee at the University of Tennessee, will then provide an overview of a community needs assessment that incorporated these strategies and technologies to assess the urban transportation routes to grocery stores most often used by WIC participants in Knox County, Tennessee.
