Today, more than 23 million adolescents and children in the United States-nearly one in three young people-are either obese or overweight, placing them at increased risk for serious diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and stroke. Schools have a unique opportunity to play a crucial role in supporting the health of our nation's children. The National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs provide meals to tens of millions of children each day, accounting for up to one-half of those students' daily calories. While school food programs must meet nutritional standards to receive federal subsidies, foods sold outside of those programs (including vending machines, cafeteria à la carte offerings, snack bars and school stores) are largely exempt from such requirements. These foods-technically called "competitive foods"-are often high in calories and low in nutrition value, and the widespread availability of these foods in school environments undermines efforts to promote healthy eating policies. This webinar will share nonpartisan analysis and evidence-based research to help inform individuals and policymakers who are interested in school nutrition and the potential impact of upcoming policy changes.

The webinar will feature:
