We need your assistance identifying potentially qualified a student for the DOHMH's Stelllar Famer's Markets Food Access and Community Health Program.  Under the CUNY SPH-DOHMH Faculty and Student Consulting agreement, DOHMH is looking for a bi-lingual (English-Spanish) undergraduate or graduate CUNY SPH student (does not need any experience in Nutrition) (see description below).  The position pays $16.31/hour for approximately 10 hours per week. Bilingual Nutrition Educator


The New York City Department and Health's Stellar Farmers' Market program, aims to increase fruit and vegetable consumption among SNAP-eligible New Yorkers by providing free bilingual nutrition and cooking workshops at farmers' markets in low-income neighborhoods throughout NYC. The program addresses pertinent nutrition and food safety topics and conducts cooking demonstrations and taste sampling of recipes utilizing local produce. Workshop attendees also receive a $2 Health Bucks coupon to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at a farmers' market, which also supports regional agriculture and viability of farmers' markets in traditionally underserved areas.

The Stellar Farmers' Market program conducts bilingual workshops at farmers' markets throughout the boroughs of NYC and hires consultants on a part-time, seasonal basis.  The Bilingual Nutrition Educator will be a part of a team at assigned market(s) and will be responsible for ensuring accurate and fluent Spanish translation of nutrition education workshops and cooking demonstrations.

Goals and Objectives:
The Bilingual Nutrition Educator, fluent in Spanish and English, will be primarily responsible for helping the program achieve its objective of increasing fruit and vegetable consumption among Spanish-speaking workshop participants.  To achieve this goal the student consultant will be responsible for translating workshops from English to Spanish and administering outcome evaluation surveys. In addition the student consultants will assist with overall implementation of workshops to ensure high quality of programming.

Deliverables:

  *   Translate nutrition education workshops and cooking demonstrations from English to Spanish.

*         Implement outcome evaluation survey and track program outputs

*         Providing the public, market managers, and farmers with information about NYC Health Department programs

*         Liaising potential community organizations with supervisors for classes and additional services.

*         Attend period meetings at the NYC Health Department in Long Island City.



Requirements:
*    Spanish and English Fluency Required;
*    Experience in translating information from English to Spanish;
*    Experience working in multi-cultural settings with diverse populations;
*    Knowledgeable about nutrition and community food security issues in New York City;
*    Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, and the ability to work well as part of a team;
*    Willingness to work without sitting for long periods and enjoy working in outdoor settings in a variety of weather conditions.
*    Attend a two-day training
*    Ability to work 1 market day per week (~8am - 4pm), which may include one weekend day, for the duration of the winter farmers' market season (February-May).
