Background:  The Brooklyn DPHO is a community-based arm of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene that targets resources and programs to neighborhoods in North and Central Brooklyn of high public health need, including Bedford Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Bushwick, and East New York.  In September 2010, the DPHO launched Healthy Schools - Brooklyn to assist public schools in in developing and implementing school wellness policies to promote nutrition, physical activity, and tobacco control.

Internship Project:  Work with 3 schools on comprehensive wellness policies by identifying a school wellness or partnership committee and assist schools in developing monthly committee meetings to launch school wellness policy work.  The intern will assist team and school stakeholders in completing assessment tools to identify current practices and policies around nutrition and physical activity.  Following completion of assessment, the intern will work with schools to implement NYC DOE Wellness Policies and assist schools in pursuing resources that will increase physical activity time and opportunities for health eating.

Location:  Intern will be based at the Brooklyn DPHO in Bedford Stuyvesant.  Intern will work with 3 schools in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brownsville and/or East New York.

Tasks and Timeline:  From September 2013 to January 2014, intern will work with Department of Health staff to:
§  Contact participating schools and identify existing school wellness leadership team and/or meet with school administration to develop school wellness team;
§  Organize monthly meetings of school wellness team to discuss wellness policies and complete assessments;
§  Support the school in adopting and implementing the NYC DOE Wellness Policy based on interests and strengths identified in assessments;
§  Attend internship meetings with the Healthy Schools Brooklyn Coordinator and report activities with schools and other stakeholders
§  Provide brief summary report to DPHO and enter schools data into tracking database.
§  By the end of January 2014, summarize findings of completed assessments, present back to wellness team their accomplishments over the semester in implementing wellness policies that increase healthy eating and physical activity in the school and offer feedback to the school regarding their next steps

Qualifications & Experience:  The ideal applicant would be a graduate-level student, with preliminary training in community public health and community outreach. Certain activities would require applicant to speak persuasively on health topics. Familiarity with public transportation is necessary. Fluency in Spanish is not required, but a plus.
