Dear Barbara,

Happy New Year and May this year bring all the Successes to you.

It gives me great pleasure to invite students from your school to participate in our Intensive Summer & After School STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) & Allied Sciences Internship Program by the Institutes of Science, Society & Technology (ISST)<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001aqQgcSHg6-JWwhEv00ceRejM5VHho_R2AQcnGUTN1VK2lXAvIWfSdCzXxdbR8naYDwnsq6LRJkiAI_IzQI3dlCnq4Y4_xZm_W_DTr_Lus_VLEUZGFR5wh_eWzAjqq7WkcvclzXdkEzM=> sponsored by Harlem Children Society (HCS)<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001aqQgcSHg6-LpSW8Tcu12fsTIVmtkxfGKlfJoofLoy9e3nss14_WL_-Y1U1_yJwoSPXvPZ-ZJGl0W3hmdSAkqOvWu4ZJm-32g998fyGdtEAM=> and Association of Science & Society (AS&S) for the High School students (grades 9-12) AND Middle School (grades 6-9). It not only is one of the most highly regarded programs of its kind in the New York tri-state area, and across the country, but is also setting a global paradigm.

"Dr. Sat, I commend you on this excellent program for training young minds. All of you (students) are indeed lucky to be in a program like this. You must make the best use of your time spend in this program and evolve life long connections. Congratulations"."

Nobel Laureate (Physiology & Medicine) Dr. Richard Axel, Columbia University

"You all are very luck to be in a program like this....Your hard work and discipline with this program will lead you to successes in the future..."

Nobel Laureate (Chemistry), Dr. Sidney Altman, Yale University

In almost 13 years, since I started the program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with just three students from two high schools (who since are at Engineering and MD/PhD programs) doing research in my laboratory, the program has expanded involving over 1500 mentors, 200 partner institutions, and over 400 students from 200 schools. HCS's impressive success is directly attributable to the cooperative efforts of a network of institutions like yours as part of its innovative model. The organizational centerpiece features a unique collaboration between schools, teachers, government organizations, industry professionals, university faculty, community leaders, and contributing foundations, and is the quintessential formula for encouraging achievement in the most diligent, deserving students from impoverished backgrounds. As of 2012, without exception, all HCS students graduating high school, who applied, were admitted to college/university, with 20% attending Ivy League schools. We invite you to visit our website (especially "Bird's Eye View" and "involvements) at www.HCS2K.ORG<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001aqQgcSHg6-KvsukE09-nhMiBh1eM7oZ3JZ1An_LzOileG-JiKdzzVwZ7AN7IJeatv7ZHB-XLE_mnKJN5l_FQfuSg-YZtw7JpOiyyDb1DHR_E34pO0ydQFMfluUxN1vbSGnLaeoarrKkV_z1ZZ0Wj-N1d9sb-mdhcpDHePSJZylyldCsMwZJnZgefGDQ6-6t4qHGLts7yugs=> for information about our programs.

"We need students who want to learn and want to experience the pure joy of discovery, ...mentors and scientists who are absolutely committed to sharing their love of science with others, and will open their lab up any time to help students,....families who are willing to support you and your pursuit of this vision, and ... visionaries like Dr. Sat, who have the energy to bring something wonderful like the Harlem Children Society to life."

Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D., President of Stony Brook University

The HCS program is very competitive and selective. In order to be considered, students MUST demonstrate a strong interest and aptitude in the STEM fields, exhibit an exemplary academic and attendance record.

1. Please identify 5 to 25 students for the 2013 summer internship program who meet these criteria. I personally will interview each of the students once they have applied.

2. They MUST meet our family income criteria (Title 1, families below US poverty guidelines, maximum income of $34,500 for family of four; or up to $50,000, if the student is first family member to attain college/university level education). A limited number of seats available for students in higher income brackets this year. These students may not qualify for the performance based scholarships that we provide. Instead, there would be a FEE for these students depending on their family's income. These criteria will be notified at a later stage.

3.Please contact us once you have selected your students to schedule an interview. All students from your school are required to come on the same time and day.

"In the twenty-five years that I spent as a physician and the three years that I have been a Science Educator, I have rarely, if ever, been acquainted with a place that is as vital to what you have created at the Harlem Children Society. Engaging curious students in important work is merely the beginning of what you have accomplished. Your personal attention to educational needs coupled with your support and enthusiasm remains unmatched by any other entity I am aware of. The students who come to HCS leave as confident life-long learners, equipped with science research skills that are so needed in our world today."

Dr. Barbara Zarou, MD, Bronx Health Sciences HS, Bronx, NY

"In reality, in a good society, it's the right of every child to have a full education, just as healthcare is a right. And that's what's remarkable about what Dr. Sat has done.... Dr. Sat's work is truly extraordinary. He has created this from the beginning, and he's done it in a way which society should have done. And he's done it from the bottom, that is to say, by working with people who need it, not from some bureaucratic position."

Professor Robin Briehl, MD, PhD., Professor of Physiology, Biophysics & Biochemistry

Albert Einstein School of Medicine

We are certain that HCS offers one of the most valuable STEM educational experiences for students available anywhere, and are committed to offering our program without compromise, even as we face the challenges of the deepening economic downturn. In order to do this, however, we need your help bridging the "dollar divide". We are therefore requesting that you, as a participating school, make a (suggested) investment to offset HCS's substantially greater expenditure. You will be investing in an invaluable life-transforming experience for your student(s). (NB: HCS is an authorized vendor with the NY DOE: HCS Tax ID #335-216-8157 and HCS NYC DOE Vendor # HAR042000).

"Many years back when I was looking for opportunities for my daughter in high school, Princess, I stumbled across this program that has since changed our lives. Not only my daughter who then was in high school sent to do research at NASA laboratories, and continued the work for several years, but, the program helped her get a full scholarship at Carnegie Mellon University. She graduated with a double major in Biomedical and Material Science & Engineering. She is continuing her PhD at Cornell University. Today this program has opened many doors for my daughter, making her life better and us. Thank you Dr. Sat for changing our lives."

Mother of HCS student, Princess Kara Parker Smith, HCS Cass of 2005

HCS has been rated as one of the most outstanding programs of its kind in the US, and increasingly setting a global paradigm. We not only provide students an opportunity to gain valuable research experience with renowned scientists, doctors and engineers, but we also prepare them for future educational pursuits. Students advance scholastically, socially, and professionally in the HCS program. HCS graduates have attended, often on full scholarships to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the US, including Columbia University, Dartmouth College, Cornell, Hunter, Swarthmore College, Penn State, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and others. Several of our students are recipients of several awards and prizes including: New York Times, Posse, Gates Millennium, and several others.

Besides these benefits, HCS sponsors its annual “Global Harlem Science Parades and Street Fairs & Festivals<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001aqQgcSHg6-KuSvsKw2k7WAKWshiUx1ag-PL5i2NSbugK6BWi-iUkli8N25cDcmPKMA_zVM9C29cr38MV9XC4Whcih-xhnq3AqcJWSMsJG8w1FLozEZaFMSFrLnzsrDFa2b0vuyogwP-ElpgqYQNY92J0L7mO7qUGWT309q8udYsAdIhJNU5EY6stQsqikutgPiUtMs_5gSUG9k76hvNuVNJtDhiixWD83FvfJY-r1BM=> the jewels in the crown of its programs, which showcase students' hands-on research. Joined by their families, university and industry mentors, community and government leaders, local community members and other invited experts; our students celebrate the binding power of scientific inquiry and cultural exchange. We are very excited to announce that our "FIFTH Global Harlem Science Parade,"and "TENTH Annual Global Harlem Street Fairs and Festivals", will be organized on - Saturday, September 28th, 2013.We are very excited about this annual event, and request that you plan to participate and save the date. HCS anticipates your students, marching band, and interested faculty will proudly represent your school! Since this unique occasion is open to all students - we encourage that you encourage other students to present their science projects, and also the faculty of showcase and represent their science and math departments. Among other entities, major universities, colleges, hospitals and institutions are also expected to participate. Major press and media are also expected to cover these events. This undoubtedly would be an occasion to showcase your school, students and your programs and be known!

HCS's quintessential formula rests on its Relationships, Absolute Partnerships, and Collaborations across different levels and aisles. It has served as a bridge evolving paradigms for teaching, learning, and performing research. By spearheading training our youth and future of our generation, honing in them skills and nurturing their abilities until adulthood, HCS<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001aqQgcSHg6-K7K5u0TbPQfpfaAiUMJRrBcnj13Q9FqD9nh3XP3UdPeWYDZ9CPzhIZlqRCE9oy9MSAn4j8gO8TbjMVrQ6m0xfXSk4HB2B2NQP2oWUNCWaiKIQiTqHH8f4knZ7q7HJf6i8=> intends to be a life partner of the taught - keeping the process of its own vigor in full blossom.

We are increasingly falling behind in high technology fields and there is already a sheer lack of skills in high-end fields of medicine and research. We can no longer afford to neglect these areas of high skills in order to be competitive, continue in our leadership, and maintain our global pre-eminence. We must train our youth to secure our place in the 21st century and beyond. Considering the need and potential, we have identified and already have piloted seven areas of research and training in our: "HCS Institutes for Research & Training". We are developing our own - Institutes of Science, Society & Technology (ISST)<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001aqQgcSHg6-JWwhEv00ceRejM5VHho_R2AQcnGUTN1VK2lXAvIWfSdCzXxdbR8naYDwnsq6LRJkiAI_IzQI3dlCnq4Y4_xZm_W_DTr_Lus_VLEUZGFR5wh_eWzAjqq7WkcvclzXdkEzM=>, an already in-house piloted program in 21st Century fields through creation of the following centers: Nanotechnology; Bio-Informatics; GeoSpatial & Geographical Information Systems (GIS); Epidemiology & Biostatistics; Forensic Science; Nutrition & Health; Earth & Environmental Studies; Space Technology, Advanced Physics & Space Technology; Engineering, Math, Computer Technology Data Management; and Bio-Ethics & Social Development.

HCS<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001aqQgcSHg6-K7K5u0TbPQfpfaAiUMJRrBcnj13Q9FqD9nh3XP3UdPeWYDZ9CPzhIZlqRCE9oy9MSAn4j8gO8TbjMVrQ6m0xfXSk4HB2B2NQP2oWUNCWaiKIQiTqHH8f4knZ7q7HJf6i8=> sprang from the dream of creating a better community through a shared vision of academic inquiry and scholastic achievement despite the odds against success based on financial and societal limitations. From the launch of the initial program in 2001 with three students under my tutelage in at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, until to date, the program encompasses a network of over 15,000 mentors, in 500 partner institutions. In 2010 over 400 students (96% of minority backgrounds) from 250 schools in New York alone. An additional 400 students span across the country and worldwide supported by my own private resources. However, with the economic decline in 2011, our program saw a slight dip, which we intend to surmount over this coming year with your help.

Over a thousand five hundred students have gone through our programs and we have been following all our students since inception. One hundred percent of our students have continued their higher education at leading institutions of higher learning - with 80% still taking sciences and over 20% in Ivy League institutions. I personally interview and select all students in the program, and over the years we've seen that there has been over 80% retention in the sciences/medicine/engineering, with 20% entering schools such as Dartmouth, Columbia, Cornell, Smith, MIT, Caltech, RPI, Carnegie Mellon, NYU, and many others. We follow our students all through their adult life and keep them engaged in the sciences. Presently we are evolving teacher-training programs and work in close association with the school to help them deliver better education systems. Our unique approach involving - motivating and engaging our students through a hands-on approach in science research; shoring their abilities using other rectifying measures; lectures, seminars and workshops with other reputed professionals and colleagues; involving the schools, and family members; and community involvement with - "Science Parades and Science Street Fairs & Festivals" - the jewels in the crown of its programs, which showcase students' hands-on research. Joined by their families, university and industry mentors, community and government leaders, local community members and other invited experts; our students celebrate the binding power of scientific inquiry and cultural exchange.

All our programs have been possible thanks to you, and our family of donors. We know these are difficult times for all of us. However, to continue providing the best education in STEM and Allied Sciences, we still need your support, now more than ever, in this time of financial crisis.
