SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The Director, Product Development will play a key role in developing new products for AccentHealth's audience, doctors offices, and advertisers. The Project Manager will be responsible for overseeing planning and implementation of the Bronx Campaign to Prevent and Control Obesity. Bedford Stuyvesant Early Childhood Development Center, Inc. ("BSECDC") is seeking a Nutrition Consultant with the following qualifications to work with Head Start children ages 3 years to 5 years attending a high quality education program that uses a holistic approach and provides comprehensive education and social services to the children ("scholars"), their families and the community. We have a total of 408 Head Start scholars in 8 sites. You can apply to serve some or all scholars.

Training or experience in holistic nutrition

Training or experience in working with young children.

1. Consultant will work with BSECDC staff to assure that BSECDC is in compliance with the following specific HS Standards:

Identification of each scholar's nutritional needs, based on discussions with family, staff and or review of the appropriate scholars' folders, taking into account nutrition-related assessment data, e.g., height, weight, hemoglobin/hematocrit, and information about family eating patterns, including cultural preferences and special dietary requirements for each scholar with nutrition-related health problems.

3. Review of BSECDC's nutrition program to assure that it meets the nutritional needs and feeding requirements of each scholar, including those with special dietary needs and children with disabilities and to assure that it serves a variety of foods which consider cultural and ethnic preferences and which broaden the child's food experience. Consultant will assure that BSECDC provides at least ½ to 2/3 of the scholar's daily nutritional needs, that the quantities and kinds of food served conform to recommended serving sizes and minimum standards for meal patters recommended in USDA meal pattern or nutrient standard menu planning requirement s out lined in 7 CFR parts 210, 220, and 226, and that foods served are high in nutrients and low in fat, sugar, and salt. Consultant will work with BSECDC to assure that parents and appropriate community agencies are involved in planning, implementing and evaluating BSECDC' s nutritional services.

4. Assure that BSECDC's nutritional services contribute to the development and socialization of enrolled scholars by providing a variety of food which broadens each scholar's food experiences and medically-based diets or other dietary requirements are accommodated an as developmentally appropriate, opportunity is provided for the involvement of scholars in food-related activities.

5. Assure that BSECDC is providing parent education activities that include opportunities to assist individual families with food preparation and nutritional skills.

6. Assure that BSECDC is posting evidence of compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local food safety and sanitation laws, including those related to the storage, preparation and service of food and the health of food handlers.

1. BSECDC may receive occasional announced and unannounced monitoring visits from federal, state and local agencies. Consultant will work with BSECDC staff to prepare for such visits that may include the following requirements:

2. To assure meal and snack periods are appropriately scheduled and adjusted to meet the individual needs of BSECDC students (referenced as "Scholars");

3. To assure that BSECDC meets the nutritional needs and feeding requirements of all Scholars, including current USDA recommendations;

4. To address special dietary needs/requirements;

5. To accommodate the feeding and nutritional needs of children with disabilities;

6. To consider cultural and ethnic preferences when creating menus;

7. To assure that BSECDC serves a variety of food that broadens the Scholars' food experience; and

8. To assure that BSECDC schedules meal and snack times to support individual needs of Scholars, including adjusting schedules where necessary such as for Scholars who arrive late.

1. If Consultant is not be able to complete all of her recommendations within the scope of this Agreement, Consultant should use the following guidelines for developing priorities:

1. Complete an assessment of BSECDC's compliance with the applicable HS Standards and provide recommendations and plan of action to correct deficiencies, if any, and suggested priorities.

2. Using a holistic approach, focus on the nutritional needs of scholars identified as having special needs, e.g., physical, behavioral, cognitive, and nutritional needs, as identified by Education Directors and Disabilities Coordinators, Family Service Coordinators and other BSECDC staff and the families of such scholars.

3. Make revisions to current BSECDC menus to assure not only compliance with HS Standards, but to comply with best practices from a holistic, nutritional perspective.

SUMMARY: Working with the Executive Director of the Sackler Institute and other members of the Academy to support the activities of the Institute including working with experts, working groups and advisory councils, organizing scientific conferences, managing partnerships and publications.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Oversee the day-to-day activities of the Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science, including working with experts, advisory councils, and working groups; network with stakeholders in the field, NGOs, and private industry; develop spreadsheets of milestones, and monitor and report on progress.

• Manage and adhere to annual program budget. Author grants for program support from government agencies, private companies, medical education, foundations, and individuals. Prepare and negotiate budgets and Letters of Agreement with partners and grantors.

• Develop and maintain budgets and discuss financial obligations with sponsors and partners. Write/manage grants and contracts, progress, follow-up reports, and budget reconciliations.

• Manage multi-stakeholder partnerships, develop and implement a system for regular updates, active engagement and reporting

• Create strategic alliances and nurture close ties with a network of leading organizations, researchers, and institutions in academia, government, and industry; collaborating with them to develop outcome-oriented and impactful programming focused on key scientific questions and critical issues.

• With the Conferences team, manage the development of nutrition conferences from idea through to completion, including post-conference reports and educational dissemination materials.

• Review applications for research grants and awards, coordinate the work of external review committees, and select individuals for Research Grants, Poster Presentations, Travel Fellowships, and Poster Prizes. Write and review reports for supporters.

• Monitor and manage information, discussion and developments in the areas of nutrition science, scientific policy around nutrition, and food safety. Compile and analyze scientific data for presentations, reports and articles.

• Work closely with and support the activities of the Academy staff including, but not limited to scientific programs and Annals.

REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in nutrition, global health, public health or related field and 3-5 years post-doctoral experience in an academic, research or a programmatic setting. Program, staff and administrative management experience is required. Excellent computer skills and familiarity with distance communication and learning tools (e.g. WebEx) required. Experience with research methodology and statistical packages, and evidence of scholarly activities such as peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentations is required. United States Federal or other successful grant writing and award management experience preferred. Must be able to travel 10-15% internationally as needed.

The successful candidate will be highly organized, with excellent communication/networking skills and have a demonstrated ability for a broad scientific perspective with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Qualified candidates will bring demonstrable project management experience as well as evidence of success working in a complex, integrated organization across many programmatic and functional departments.

The Children's Agenda is a nonpartisan, independent non-profit that provides leadership to identify key issues affecting children; presents reliable, thorough research on selected problems, including evidence-based solutions; collaborates with community partners to educate and mobilize the community to act on behalf of children; and evaluates the success of its efforts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Community Health Director will work closely with the Executive Director, President and policy staff to build and maintain a community-wide coalition and a Healthy Weight Council to serve as the locus of community consensus, strategy and action to reduce childhood obesity in the greater Rochester area. The Council will be comprised of key leaders from major stakeholder institutions in the community, including government, business, education, media, community organizations, health care, funders, faith groups, etc.

This position requires exceptional skill in building relationships, managing coalitions, strategic thinking for policy and behavioral changes, written and verbal communication, organization and management. Flexibility, initiative, and excellent follow-through are essential.

Primary responsibilities include:

• Build relationships with key community leaders to gain their commitment for participation in the Healthy Weight Council.

• Facilitate a community-wide strategy and reporting/evaluation system

• Work with current service providers to ensure alignment and coordination of efforts

• Build expertise and relationships with national experts and similar efforts throughout the country

• Convene a community-wide conference and regularly scheduled meetings of the Council.

• Work with the Healthy Weight Council, TCA Executive Director and TCA President to develop work plans and oversee their implementation.

• Research best practices and emerging policies, systems, and practices concerning healthy weight and children's social, emotional, mental and physical health and well-being.

• Understand and interpret research, public sector budgets (city, county, state, federal), policy, and practices affecting healthy weight and the well-being of children.

• Draft issue briefs, short articles, and policy proposals.

Assist with:

• Participating in general organizational meetings of The Children's Agenda staff and Board to develop strategies, policy positions, community partnerships, etc.

• Representing The Children's Agenda at community meetings.

• Testifying before government and private children's policy decision-making bodies in conjunction with the Executive Director and other staff.

• Contributing to creation of media communications strategies with our Communications Consultant and other staff, including press releases.

• Contributing to creation of advocacy strategies with other staff.

Additional responsibilities and management of special projects as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master's Degree preferred or equivalent experience (5 years or more); preferred concentration in one of the following fields: Public Policy, Public Administration, Public Health, Economics, Law, Sociology, or Political Science. Degree in another field which demonstrates knowledge/competency in policy analysis and systems change will be considered. Knowledge and experience in children's policy work preferred.
