City Harvest, a non-profit food rescue organization seeks full-time AmeriCorps member with strong communication and organizational skills to join an upbeat nutrition education department. Recent graduates welcome, with a background or strong interest in the culinary arts and/or nutrition a plus. In addition, the ideal candidate is detail-oriented, able and willing to handle heavy administrative tasks and able to complete projects within deadlines without direct supervision. You should also have experience interacting with diverse populations and be willing to work some evenings and Saturdays. You will report to the manager of nutrition education/Cooking Matters coordinator and your primary responsibility will be coordination and overseeing the Cooking Matters nutrition education and Shopping Matters supermarket tour programs. Additional projects will include data management and course monitoring within the borough of The Bronx. Term is 1700 hours of full time service over a 12 month period beginning in September 2012.

Share Our Strength's Cooking Matters is a ground-breaking nutrition education program that helps families by teaching them how to prepare healthy low-cost meals and receive the most nutrition from a limited budget. Since 1993, the program has utilized the strengths of professional chefs, nutritionists and class managers in roles as volunteer instructors, catering to individuals and families living in underserved communities. The Cooking Matters culinary and nutrition program is offered nationally and provides AmeriCorps members to a number of lead partners across the country, City Harvest being the NYC partner since year 2000.

Cooking Matters offers eight specialized courses that take a cooking-centered approach to nutrition and household budgeting. Nutrition courses are taught by chefs and nutritionists who volunteer their talents to teach families how to make healthy food choices on a limited budget. Courses are offered for adults, teens, children, parents and children together, and include six two-hour sessions. Each class includes hands-on meal preparation led by a chef who teaches participants that cooking healthy foods can be simple, enjoyable, and delicious.

Key Responsibilities:

• As part of the City Harvest Healthy Neighborhoods initiative, coordinate and oversee the implementation of Cooking Matters cooking and nutrition education courses in the South Bronx. Responsibilities include weekly communications with volunteers and site coordinators regarding lesson plans, technical support and facilitation of cooking and nutrition activities in classes.

• Support Shopping Matters supermarket tours by assisting with participant recruitment, ordering Shopping Matters materials and leading tours when necessary.

• Oversee and manage all tasks related to the Cooking Matters course database, including completing and maintaining all reports, and entering pre and post course data for all Cooking Matters courses and Shopping Matters tours into the Cooking Matters database and City Harvest course tracking spreadsheets.

• Oversee and manage Cooking Matters course materials for all host sites. Review at least twice monthly program updates on the Cooking Matters section of the Share Our Strength website and disseminate updates to the Manager, Nutrition Education.

• With the assistance of the Cooking Matters coordinator and Cooking Matters National, develop innovative recommendations for enhanced Cooking Matters courses, i.e. improved participation, graduation and retention rates.

• Monitor Cooking Matters courses in Northwest Queens to ensure quality implementation.

• Assist volunteer services in the training of Nutrition Education course volunteers and volunteers who will lead Shopping Matters tours.

• Attend all AmeriCorps training and complete all service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings and national service days. Complete and submit all necessary AmeriCorps paperwork and reports.

• Research, write and edit four quarterly Cooking Matters newsletters.

Requirements:

• College degree or 2-3 years related work experience

• Experience managing projects involving multiple people and many moving parts

• Outstanding communication skills and ability to work with diverse constituencies

• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

• Detail oriented in execution

• Good public speaking skills

• Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a team environment and with a wide variety of people living in diverse communities
