Spotlight On...Local Beef Procurement in Harrisonburg City, Virginia

Very exciting news out of Virginia! Harrisonburg City schools' first sealed bid for local beef resulted in three responses. The winning bid was from Buffalo Creek Beef, a family-run company which specializes in heritage, grain-finished, all natural beef. They will provide Harrisonburg City schools with ground beef. This is an exemplary farm to school partnership, as both parties benefit greatly. Buffalo Creek Beef is able to sell their non-primal cuts, which creates a secondary market for their business (primal cuts are top-tier cuts of beef, such as filet mignon). In turn, Harrisonburg City School students have high-quality, Virginia beef in their school lunches. Andrea Early, Executive Director of School Nutrition for Harrisonburg City Schools, says her best piece of advice is "Start small. Connect with a farmer and consider purchasing a small amount of beef for a special event day. This gives an opportunity to work out the logistics of packing, delivery and invoicing. If successful, consider expanding to serving on a regular basis at one or two schools." Schools can use ground beef in a variety of ways including tacos, spaghetti sauce, sloppy joes, meatloaf and taco beef pie.

New Jersey

In September, New Jersey will be welcoming its first class of FoodCorps Service Members for the 2013-2014 school year under the shared statewide leadership of host sites Rutgers Cooperative Extension and New Jersey Farm

[http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs190/1101250847321/img/931.jpg]to School Network. FoodCorps is a national nonprofit organization that places leaders in limited-resource communities for a year of public service, with the goal of connecting kids to real food to help them grow up healthy.

For the past two years, FoodCorps has been operating in 12 states around the country, and is now expanding into three new states --New Jersey being one of them-- for the upcoming year.

FoodCorps members will be placed with partnering service sites throughout the state to participate in three main activities, which are also known as the "three pillars" of FoodCorps: engaging kids and school staff in creating and/or maintaining school gardens, teaching kids about what healthy food means and improving farm to school access for the schools in which they work. This will be a great way for New Jersey to advance their farm to school work.
