Responsibilities

Suggest appropriate feeding modalities such as enteral or parenteral feedings to enhance the patients' nutritional status.

Instruct groups, patients and/or patient family members in regard to diet therapy to be used during and after

Provide follow-up patient care and intervention as needed or per departmental guidelines.

Work with other patient unit staff to recommend and develop plans regarding length of stay and/or expense reduction.



Maintain and enhance professional skills by participating in Department of Clinical Nutrition educational programs

as well as maintaining external resources.



Provide staff development and in-services to care center personnel and newly hired patient unit staff on the principles

and application of nutrition, diet and related procedures. Make recommendations on new policies and procedures.



Precept dietetic interns and instruct them on specific duties as applied to their assigned rotation. Provide evaluations

on students for the next preceptor so that competencies that need improvement may be identified and addressed

in a timely manner.



Responsible to the Director of Clinical Nutrition in the demonstration of conformity to all legal, regulatory agencies

and Department of Clinical Nutrition policies, procedures and guideline requirements.

REQUIREMENTS:



Must possess a Bachelor and/or preferably a Master’s Degree in Food and Nutrition from an accredited institution with an approved plan from the American Dietetic Association and have completed an approved qualifying experience.



Must have passed the registration exam administered by the American Dietetic Association and possess registration credentials (Registered Dietitian-RD) from the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association with on-going portfolio documentation of continuing education in progress.



Must have an active RD license.



One to two years of progressive experience in dietetics including the dietetic internship.



Must have analytical abilities necessary to assess patient nutrition status, plan a suitable diet, and evaluate patients' compliance with diet intervention and to create effective strategic plans, interventions and initiatives.



Must possess interpersonal skills sufficient to develop working relationships with care center staff and other hospital personnel

The Physical & Health Education Teacher is responsible for the creation, development, implementation and maintenance of the Physical Education & Health programs, including the coordination of an afterschool sports program. The Registered Dietician will work for 6-7 hours per week, flexible hours.

The Christopher is a 166 unit building located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. The Lee is a 208 unit building located on the Lower East Side. Both are supportive housing residences for low income tenants, many of whom have histories of mental illness, homelessness, substance abuse, and /or HIV/AIDS.

The Registered Dietician is responsible for providing individual nutrition counseling, monitoring individuals for nutritional risk factors, maintaining documentation of participants each week, and developing and facilitating a monthly nutrition class at each program.

Good Shepherd Services, a leading NYC non-profit committed to the success of young people and families, is currently seeking an Activity Instructor (Culinary Arts), for our Sumner Community Center Program in Brooklyn.

The Activity Instructor will teach participants how to cook affordable and nutritious healthy meals.

MAJOR DUTIES:

• Develop healthy living culinary arts curriculum.

• Prepare lesson plans for culinary arts class and submit prior to implementation.

• Shop for groceries and materials needed to conduct class.

• Plan and implement a culminating project at the end of each cycle.

• Market program through flyers and posters.

• Supervise students during instruction and ensure they are adhering to all safety procedures.

• Delegate roles to group leaders and/or program aides during class time to assist with the facilitation of a group (where applicable).

• Articulate expectations to group leaders and/or program aides on what aspect of the class needs to be strengthened and practiced in preparation for the next class (where applicable).

• Responsible for the setup, operation and clean up of activities and the organization, inventory and storing of relevant supplies and equipment.

• Attend all staff meetings and staff development training sessions, as specified.

• Guide program participants in examining choices, following directions and becoming involved in program activities.

• Must be a team player and willing to work with other teaching artist(s).

• Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Associates degree with a major in the teaching field. Bachelors preferred.

• Experience with youth preferred.

• Must have (2) years of work experience in the area of culinary arts and nutrition.

• Must be able to engage young people and set structure and limits in a group setting.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based and/or youth development perspective

Nutrition Educator, Food and Nutrition Program

The Organization:

Program Summary:

The Fortune Society received a contract from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Awareness Program (HPNAP) to support our Cooking, Nutrition and Fresh Food Distribution Program. The project is sited at our two housing facilities in West Harlem and our main service center in Long IslandCity, Queens; it centers on the distribution of fresh, locally-sourced produce coupled with culturally competent nutrition education that recognizes and responds to the domestic, cultural, and financial realities of the population we serve. Additionally, we just received additional funding to expand our cooking and nutrition education options for the children at our residence in West Harlem as well as the 18-24 year olds we serve at Long IslandCity through our Alternative to Incarceration Program.

The Position:

The Fortune Society is seeking to fill the part-time position of Nutrition Educator. Under the supervision of the Food Programs Coordinator, the Nutrition Educator is responsible for:

Responsibilities:

1. Planning and executing workshops at our CastleGardens residence as well as at our Long IslandCity service center.

2. Link nutrition education to interactive cooking classes.

3. Focusing individual workshops on relevant client concerns such as children's nutrition, heart-healthy eating, monitoring sodium, and dietary concerns for diabetics.

4. Overseeing and guiding program volunteers.

5. Filling out self-evaluation reports each workshop to be delivered to the Food Programs Coordinator.

6. Advising The Fortune Society on how best to support healthy eating choices for participants.

Qualifications

• Registered Dietician or significant progress toward obtaining R.D. certification

• Coursework/pursuing a masters or a bachelor's degree in Nutrition and/or Dietetics

• Applicant should have an interest in food systems and how they contribute to diet, and a desire to increase food-access in NYC's low-income communities.

• Experience, confidence and comfort level in conducting adult, young adult and family nutrition education sessions

• Familiarity and/or experience developing teaching relevant curriculum, particularly with a focus on youth and young adults. Familiarity with Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables a plus.

• Commitment to the organization and participants as demonstrated by reliability, enthusiasm, preparedness, and positive attitude about the program and nutrition.

Possesses and applies knowledge of nutrition support.



Bachelor of Science degree in food and nutrition or food service management or dietetics required. Registered Dietitian, registry eligible (with successful completion of RD exam within one year of employment) or New York State Certification as Dietitian/Nutritionist is required.
