HIST 78400 and PUBH 85100 Topics in Public Health: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Corporations and Health, 1900-2012, Tuesdays, 4:15-6:15 pm, Distinguished Professors Gerald Markowitz and Nicholas Freudenberg.  Fall 2012. Graduate Center, 34th Street and Fifth Avenue

This course introduces students to historical, epidemiological and sociological perspectives on the impact of corporations on population health.  Through in-depth investigations of selected industries, products and practices, students will analyze the changing pathways and mechanisms by which corporate practices influence the health of consumers and workers and of the environment in the developed and the developing world.  It will also examine how scientists, health professionals, consumers, workers, environmentalists and related social movements have acted to modify the health-damaging consequences of corporate practices.  Among the topics to be explored are lead in paint and gasoline, automobiles, tobacco, food and beverages, and pharmaceuticals.  Students will write a case study of a specific industry or product and the public health response to it.
