Obesity rates among US adults increased from slightly over 32% in 2003 to 2004 to nearly 38% by 2013 to 2014, and was prevalent in about 40% of middle-aged adults, compared with 37% of older adults and 32% of younger adults, according to the CDC. Researchers analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys and found that 17% of US children were obese between 2011 and 2014, with higher rates seen among teens than among younger children. The job of a hospital clinical analyst in the area of informatics includes creating new treatment protocols that are integrated into electronic health records and clinical provider order entry systems, said registered dietitian Cathy Walsh, a senior clinical analyst at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Walsh said she took additional training in computer technology to become a webmaster and database manager and was able to combine those skills with her bedside experience as an RD to become a clinical informatics analyst. Swedish researchers found infants who were genetically at-risk for celiac disease had a twofold increased risk of developing the disease if they were fed gluten before age 2, compared with those who weren't exposed to gluten. A study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine showed only 40% of preschool-age children had two or more outdoor play periods daily, while 32% had no time outside. The findings, based on 388 children enrolled in 30 child care centers in Cincinnati from November 2009 to January 2011, revealed children who spent at least 60 minutes playing outdoors were more active over 24 hours than children who didn't play outside.
