TITLE:  Role of beverages in obesity and chronic disease prevention

DESCRIPTION:
This webinar will describe the health effects associated with the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and water.  This webinar will also describe efforts of promoting healthy beverage intake in a variety of settings.



LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 1.       Identify the health effects of consuming sugar-sweetened beverages.

 2.       Explain how increasing access to drinking water can complement approaches to decrease sugar-sweetened beverage consumption.

 3.       Summarize the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Nutrition Physical Activity and Obesity initiatives surrounding healthy beverage intake.



PRESENTERS:

Sohyun Park, PhD, MS.

Epidemiologist

Obesity Prevention and Control Branch, Division of Nutrition Physical Activity and Obesity (DNPAO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Since Dr. Park joined the DNPAO in July 2009, her primary responsibility has been conducting research on reducing sugar-sweetened beverage intake, increasing drinking water intake, and preventing obesity. She is a primary/coauthor on 41 peer-reviewed articles, 55 abstracts, and 1 book chapter.



Stephen Onufrak, PhD, MPH

Epidemiologist, Obesity Prevention and Control Branch, Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Onufrak’s work encompasses healthy beverages and the role of the retail food environment in nutrition and obesity prevention. Specific areas of research include the role of drinking water access in assuring healthy beverage intake in schools, childcare, and other settings.
