Integrative and Functional Nutrition for the RDN

This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of integrative and functional medical nutrition therapy (IFMNT), and the Standards of Practice and Professional Performance (SOP/SOPP) for RDNs in integrative and functional nutrition (IFN). The IFMNT Radial demonstrates key knowledge areas and a conceptual framework for implementation of IFMNT, and how IFMNT can be integrated it into the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) of Assessment, Diagnosis, Intervention, Monitoring and Evaluation (ADIME). An overview of integrative and functional nutrition lab assessment, a framework for incorporating evidence-based etiology-driven dietary supplementation, and case examples of IFN by RDNs in different practice roles will provide the RDN with a foundation to provide safe and effective IFMNT at their level of practice. Resources are provided to identify how RDNs can advance their professional development from Beginner to Novice to Competent to Proficient to Advanced Practice in IFN.

Integrative and Sports Nutrition – Broadening Perspectives

Integrative nutrition along with sports nutrition are specialty areas of practice with a growing demand, but how can integrative nutrition approaches best be put to use in a sports nutrition practice? This presentation will cover an introduction to the successful implementation of integrative nutrition within the sports nutrition field. Topics covered will include an introduction to the medical fitness model team approach to quality care, integrative diet therapies for managing common athletic complaints, a review of common sports nutrition supplements, and mind, body, spirit approaches to improving performance.

The Science, Art & Practice of Dietary Supplementation

This presentation will guide the clinician in the science, art and practice of dietary supplementation, and include an educational framework for provider and patient competencies for informed shared decision making about dietary supplementation. Key knowledge areas reviewed will include: scope of practice, legal and regulatory perspectives, bioethics of dietary supplementation, assessing the strength of the evidence, Rakel’s Evidence vs. harm grading, assumption of risk, risk benefit analysis, structure and function claims vs. medical claims, safety and efficacy, mechanism of action, quality/purity/identity of dietary supplements, FDA Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs), dose response relationship, dose escalation, sequential introduction, reasonably foreseeable side effects vs. adverse events, adverse event reporting, clinical and biochemical monitoring and evaluation, start and stop dates, medical contraindications, at-risk populations, drug/food interactions, informed consent, dietary supplementation policy, formulary inclusion/exclusion criteria and financial disclosure, Nutrition Care Process ADIME and written documentation. Case studies and practice pearls that integrate these principles will enhance the participant’s understanding.
