USDA Makes Funds Available to State Agencies to Help Keep Young Children in WIC
WASHINGTON, May 3, 2016 – U.S. Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Kevin Concannon announced that approximately $2 million in grants is available to help state agencies retain young children in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program through age 5. Young children are vulnerable to a wide of variety of nutrition-related problems that can impair their development and growth, making WIC a crucial part of ensuring young children have a foundation for nutritional success. USDA Unveils New 'Urban Agriculture Toolkit' for Urban Farmers and Agri-business Entrepreneurs
WASHINGTON, April 29, 2016 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today unveiled the USDA Urban Agriculture Toolkit<http://HungerFreeAmerica.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=f98dc9b62ab881fa8bab218e6&id=68b0290aa0&e=3fd8dc8984>, a new resource created by USDA's Know Your Farmer team to help entrepreneurs and community leaders successfully create jobs and increase access to healthy food through urban agriculture. From neighborhood gardens grown on re-purposed lots, to innovative mobile markets and intensive hydroponic and aquaculture operations, urban food production is rapidly growing into a mature business sector in cities across the country.

Best Practices From Across the Country
Each month, Hunger Free America will highlight a best practice in anti-hunger by AmeriCorps VISTAs from across the country. This month we will highlight Gabby Tilley and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.
Gabby Tilley, AHOC member with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, had success with her SNAP application assistance program by placing volunteers at organizations with multiple services for low-income individuals. Some of the other services offered include family therapy, youth mentoring, assistance with healthcare and utility bills.
WIC offices can also be great partners since WIC and SNAP have similar eligibility requirements, and households may be able to enroll in both programs at the same time.
Other valuable partnerships can include local colleges, most of which will have a Economic Opportunity Office or counseling center that will provide you access to student populations in need of assistance.

USDA National Hunger Clearinghouse
Hunger Free America is operating the USDA National Hunger Clearinghouse Database as well as the National Hunger Hotline.
* The National Hunger Hotline is a great resource for people needing assistance accessing the online database. Anyone can call in between the hours of 8 AM and 8 PM EST, to talk to a person about the food resources near them in English or Spanish.
* During summer months, the hotline provides information about meal sites where children 18 years old and under can get free, nutritious meals through the USDA Summer Food Service Program<http://HungerFreeAmerica.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=f98dc9b62ab881fa8bab218e6&id=5b523e368e&e=3fd8dc8984>.
