The General Assembly of the United Nations' proclamation of 2016 as the "International Year of Pulses" focuses attention on pulse crops, such as beans, peas, lentils, and chickpeas. This diverse group of staple foods has been cultivated by civilizations across the globe for over 10,000 years. Global activities throughout 2016 will explore the integral role these nutrient-dense foods can play in small-holder sustainable cropping systems and meeting the global nutrition and agricultural challenges of our time. This inaugural conference will look at the contribution of pulses in healthy and sustainable diets, examine how pulses can make significant impacts on public health, and explore opportunities for enhancing these benefits broadly through food system innovations.

On March 26-27, 2015, nutrition and dementia researchers and practitioners gathered for a two-day conference focusing on nutrition and dementia. An opening session focused on the myriad neurological and physiological changes that unfold during the course of aging, and how these changes might be influenced by nutrition. A second session focused on how diet, lifestyle, and nutrient supplementation impact dementia prevention, and a final session looked at nutrition and distinct nutritional requirements in the management of dementia.
