Online Continuing Education Courses in Childhood Obesity   F R E E

Free online modules addressing obesity-related issues are available through the UMN School of Public Health. These online modules require registration; however, after your initial registra­tion, you may log in for any future trainings without registering again.

Child Care and School Environments: Settings for Obesity Prevention Among Youth

This module focuses on the role of child care and school settings for preventing obesity among chil­dren and adolescents. It discusses USDA nutrition programs as well as other foods and beverages available in child care and school environments; challenges to the provision of opportunities for phys­ical activity; current regulations and recommendations for child care and schools; and opportunities for improving food and physical activity environments. [25 minutes in duration].

Weight Bias & Stigma: Implications for Healthcare and Health Promotion Efforts

This module addresses weight bias, or negative attitudes toward obese people, and its important implications in childhood obesity prevention efforts. Learning objectives include: (a) differentiating between weight bias, stigma, and discrimination; (b) identifying why weight bias is a concern, (c) iden­tifying examples of weight bias in healthcare and media, and (d) summarizing potential strategies to reduce weight bias in health promotion efforts. [13 minutes in duration].

Evaluating Childhood Obesity Policy Impact In School Settings

This module addresses the evaluation of childhood obesity policy actions, highlighting school poli­cies in particular. Learning objectives include: (a) describing a range of approaches to evaluate policy prevalence, using school policies and practices and examples, (b) identifying the importance of evalu­ating patterns in policy distribution and impacts, and (c) identifying a comprehensive policy evalua­tion resources. [30 minutes in duration].

Pulling It All Together: How Do We Address Childhood Obesity?

This module addresses public health approaches for reducing childhood and adolescent obesity. It discusses the decreases in obesity rates that have been recently reported in specific geographic regions of the U.S., along with efforts made by these communities and their local governments to ad­dress obesity that may be responsible for the observed declines. [40 minutes in duration].
