Subject: Gouverneur Health nutrition group

Dear Dr. Navder,

My name is Carey Rand and I am a social work intern in the Behavioral Health department at Gouverneur Hospital. Our former Nutrition Group’s facilitator Lisa Sharaby recommended us contacting you for a possible recommendation of student nutritionists who may be interested to gain volunteer experience in working with older adults in our Continuing Day Treatment Program (CDTP).

CDTP is a mental health program that serves about 30 older adults (55 years and older) from the surrounding Lower East Side community. In addition to offering mental health therapy groups, we also have skills-based and informational groups and one of them is Health and Nutrition, in which we invite volunteer nutritionists to commit to give presentations to the patients on a regular basis. Some examples of the topics include management of diets for diabetes and hypertension, how to read nutrition labels, and integration regular exercise plans in one’s healthy diets, etc. The group has been running for at least four years and is well-received by patients. Lisa volunteered for almost a year and contributed her expertise in nutrition with her warm-hearted caring style to the patients before she left for another city. We are now looking for another student nutritionist who is interested and is available to lead the group on Thursdays (either every week or every other week) from 10 to 11am, with a commitment of at least 6 months.

If you know of any students who may be a good match for our group, please feel free to direct them to me. According to Lisa, it was a great experience that gave her valuable practice in sharing her knowledge in a “real-world” setting, and she would talk about her experience with the students directly upon request.

Thank you,

Carey Rand
