CONFERENCE SPOTLIGHT:

December 17 - 18, 2012
A Global Research Agenda for Nutrition Science<https://ams.nyas.org/nyasssa/ecmssamsganalytics.click_through?p_mail_id=E153946A4726989B1C31384>
The Sackler Institute will unveil a global research agenda for nutrition science. The conference will explore the continuum that links identifying research gaps to disseminating findings, building consensus around scientific issues, advocacy in policies and eventually transforming practices. Research priorities are strong tools to begin dealing with the nutritional problems of today and those of the future. Lectures and panel discussions will feature scientists, editors, leaders in funding institutions, implementing agencies, regulatory bodies, and policy makers.

Keynote Speaker: Francesco Branca (The World Health Organization)

The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science Research Award:

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS! Deadline: October 29th, 2012, 5:00 PM EST

The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science<https://ams.nyas.org/nyasssa/ecmssamsganalytics.click_through?p_mail_id=E153946A4726989B1C31385> is now accepting applications for a nutrition science research award. The Institute will award researchers or research teams affiliated with a university or research institution in order to carry out research on the links between Nutrition and the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases. The research topics of interest to the Institute are those outlined in a recent publication on the "Prioritized Research Agenda for Prevention and Control of Non Communicable Diseases" developed by the World Health Organization.

The topics specific to nutrition-related NCDs include:

  * Study the appropriate use of food regulation, legislation and price controls to improve nutrition and reduce the risk of obesity
  * Develop and validate the use of health promotion approaches to improve nutrition programs in schools, worksites and government institutions
  * Study the effects of folic acid and vitamins B12, A and D on the development and prevention of major NCDs (other nutrients will be considered if there is a strong justification)

We are interested in innovative, rapid-response research studies that would add to our understanding of specific nutrition-related mechanisms responsible for non-communicable diseases (with focus on obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease). The Institute will award up to a maximum amount of $50,000 USD per proposal (up to a total amount of $150,000 USD in available funds in 2012).

Calendar for the award

  * Deadline to receive the outline: October 29th, 2012, 5:00 PM EST
  *   Notification to pre-selected applicants:  November, 15th, 2012
  * Deadline to receive additional information: November 25th, 2012
  *   Notification to prize-winners:  Mid-December
