Nutrition Internship Opportunity with United Way of New York City

About United Way of New York City
United Way of New York City (UWNYC) connects people, resources and ideas to create a thriving community characterized by income stability, educational success, and healthy people. Since 1984, United Way of New York City has managed a contract awarded by the New York State Department of Health, Division of Nutrition's Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP). United Way of NYC-HPNAP is dedicated to improving the health and nutritional status of New Yorkers by providing support and grants for equipment, operations and food, which must include at least 15% spending on fresh produce, to more than 350 emergency food programs.

Background:
This year, in partnership with Just Food, UWNYC will supply 48 food pantries in NYC with fresh vegetables from local farms through Local Produce Link, a farm to food pantry program. This intern will be a key member of the Local Produce Link team and contribute to all aspects of the program. This internship may be applied towards field work hours, a capstone project, or a public health internship, (we will work together to develop a suitable research project, if needed) or to gain practical experience in the field of community nutrition and public health. This is an unpaid position. Visit our website<http://www.unitedwaynyc.org/?id=17&pg=hpnap> to see a video about Local Produce Link.

Timeframe: June through August/September; and possible to extend through the fall if desired. Approximately 10 to 20 hours per week; days and time are flexible.

Responsibilities:

· Monitor and track key program indicators.

· Conduct site visits to food pantries to ensure compliance with program requirements.

· Conduct outreach to food pantry clients around special events, such as farm trips, “meet your farmer” events, and other workshops.

· Develop local produce related nutrition education materials.

· Develop, administer, and analyze mid-season program evaluation.

· Assist with cooking demonstrations at food pantries.

· Additional research projects and tasks may be assigned, as well.

Requirements:

· Enrolled in a graduate level nutrition, public health, or related field program. Strong undergraduate candidates will be considered, as well.

· Interested in cooking, especially with local vegetables, sustainable agriculture and nutrition.

· Able to work independently.

· Willing to travel to Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, as needed, on public transportation.

· Knowledge of Microsoft Publisher is a plus.

· Spanish or other foreign language skills are a plus.
