Bronx Health REACH Commends Comptroller Scott Stringer’s Report on Physical Education Disparities in NYC Schools

Bronx Health REACH applauds New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer for his report, “Dropping the Ball: Disparities in Physical Education in New York City Schools<http://institute.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=cc4837e76af55a5213c3d2950&id=53865db293&e=5222b321db>.” The report highlights the lack of certified PE teachers, dedicated space for PE and adequate PE programming. Bronx Health Day—May 15th

Health Day 2015 is an effort of the Bronx Borough President’s Office to promote physical activity and exercise in the Bronx. Please see the flier<https://www.dropbox.com/s/l5fpyteciy659lt/Final%20CHED%20Bronx%20Week%202015%20Health%20Day%20Flyer.pdf?dl=0> for a list of fitness and educational opportunities taking place throughout the borough on Friday, May 15th.  Activities include yoga, zumba, walking, mini golf, martial arts, and aerobics—classes for families, kids, and community members of all ages will be available for no charge. There will also be fitness activities at 161st and the Grand Concourse from 7:00am – 12:00pm with a free, healthy breakfast and raffle ticket provided for participants as well.

Youth Take Over the Bronx—May 16th

The first youth-led conference on environmental justice in the Bronx will take place on Saturday, May 16th from 10:00am-5:00pm. The conference was designed and organized by youth who are seeking to raise awareness around environmental justice issues and propose solutions. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, and students may earn community service credit for attending. The event will take place at Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School (1021 Jennings St, Bronx, NY 10460). Grow to Learn Meet-Up: Garden Curriculum—May 20th

Come exchange lesson plans and curriculum ideas with other school gardeners at Grow to Learn's Curriculum "Meet Up" from 4:30-6:30pm on Wednesday, May 20th. This meet up will be participant-centered, so come ready to discuss your successes, challenges, and favorite topics to teach in the garden. The event will also include an overview of existing curriculum resources in New York City and beyond for Pre-K-12 teachers. National Diabetes Prevention Program Information Session—May 20th

Grow to Learn Workshop: Outside the Box Bed Building—May 21st

Come learn about advanced raised gardening bed options, like double-high raised beds, L-shaped beds, and tiered beds. This workshop will cover the tips and techniques for basic bed building and show how they apply to more advanced options as well. The event will take place at PS 721x, 2697 Westchester Ave, Bronx, where participants will learn and practice new skills while helping PS 721x build double-high raised beds for their garden. Bronx Borough Food and Farm Tours—May – October

The New York Botanical Garden is leading a series of food and farm tours beginning this summer throughout the Bronx. These educational and interactive sessions will focus on arts, cuisine, gardening, and other topics related to food, farming, and local culture. Go! Grants for Physical Activity –Application due June 1st
KIDS In the GAME is a nonprofit organization focused on inspiring kids to thrive in life through sports. The organization is inviting public and charter schools enrolled or willing to enroll in the Let’s Move! Active Schools program, and with no current physical education program, to apply for a GO! Grant. The $1,000—$5,000 grants support physical activity in before, during, and after-school programs serving children ages 5—12 years. The programs can be new or an expansion of a current project. GreenWorker Cooperative 3 Day Start-Up – June 5-7th

This three day event is an opportunity for Bronx-based entrepreneurs to test their ideas and boost their ability to launch successful businesses faster. Teams of entrepreneurs are encouraged to attend; each team member need not be from the Bronx, but the majority of each team’s membership must be from the Bronx. Individuals without a team can apply but must be Bronx residents and be willing to work with other interested participants to form a team during the weekend-long event, which will take place from June 5-7 at the BXL Bronx Business Incubator in Hunts Point (1231 Lafayette Ave, 2nd floor). Mott Haven Garden Tour—June 6th

Grow to Learn invites you to participate in a walking tour of school and community gardens in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx from 11:30am-2:30pm on Saturday, June 6th. Make connections with other school and community gardeners, learn about school garden curricula, tour a community garden that hosts students from a neighboring school, and get connected to resources and support for gardens all over the city. This tour will involve walking to a few sites within a 10 block radius, so please wear walking shoes. South Bronx Farmers Market—Opens June 13th

The South Bronx Farmers Market is opening the season soon! The market is located on the south side of 138th Street, between Willis and Alexander Avenues in Mott Haven, South Bronx, near the 3rd Avenue/138th Street subway station on the 6 train.  In 2015, the Market will be open every Saturday, from June 13 through November 21, from 10:00am to 4:00pm. They accept SNAP/EBT, WIC and FMNP checks.  They will also participate in NYC's Health Bucks Program: during the Health Bucks season (July - Sept), shoppers that use their EBT at the farmers markets will receive a $2 Health Buck for every $5 spent, adding 40% to their spending power. Healthy Schools NY Resources

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has launched a new ‘Healthy Schools Environments’ feature<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=5499c2d9ecf09110f7f09c9f05e70600e3e3c1a99f5d3de9fa05bfe74f4a0a84> highlighting RWJF-funded research showing that healthier school meals and snacks can help improve kids’ diets and may help reduce obesity, as well as that increased physical activity for students improves health and academic achievement. The site includes the latest studies and analyses from leading research institutions, school success stories, and info-graphics. Please take a look and share with your school community!



Active Design Toolkit for Schools

As part of the Partnership for a Healthier New York City, Bronx Health REACH is excited to release the Active Design Toolkit for Schools. This toolkit provides ideas and resources to incorporate active design into schools in an effort to promote physical activity and healthy eating. Many of the ideas presented are simple, but have immense potential to improve the overall success, health, and well-being of our City’s students. BOKS Before School Activity Program

An initiative of the Reebok Foundation, BOKS provides an opportunity for students in K-5 schools to be physically active before the school day begins. Students will participate in fitness-based activities, play fun, non-competitive games, and learn the benefits of good nutrition. This program has been shown to get kids energized, alert, awake, and has contributed to fewer disciplinary problems and improved confidence. Teachers and community volunteers can be trained to lead the program, and the curriculum is available online for elementary and middle schools in English and Spanish.
