Healthy Eating Out:
Raising the Bar for Nutrition at Restaurants

December 17th, 2:00-3:00 pm EST

ASTHO, the Food Marketing Workgroup, and NPLAN Webinar

Americans today spend nearly half their food dollars at restaurants and other food service establishments. Eating out contributes to poor diet quality and obesity. Restaurant foods and beverages often contain high levels of calories, saturated fat, sugars, and salt. Restaurant practices, like large portions, upselling, free refills of sugary beverages, and unhealthy default side dishes, are not conducive to healthy eating.

The webinar presenters will describe policy and program options for improving restaurant food and beverages. The webinar will give an overview of a novel set of restaurant performance standards, developed by a group of experts through the RAND Corporation, that include guidelines for healthier adult and children’s meals and healthier restaurant practices. Presenters will discuss two existing healthier restaurant programs, including their strengths, challenges, and advice to others interested in creating similar programs.

Speakers:
· Moderator: Christine Fry, MPP, Senior Policy Analyst and Program Director, ChangeLab Solutions
· Kasey Pape, MS, RD, LD, Registered Dietitian, ˇPor Vida!, San Antonio Metropolitan Health District
· Kathy Payne, Director, Health Promotion, Certified Healthy Oklahoma Restaurants Program, Oklahoma State Department of Health
· Deborah Cohen, MD, MPH, RAND Corporation
