Neighborhood Grants Application Information Sessions- December 12th and 15th
Through the Neighborhood Grants<http://citizensnyc.us6.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=b76fd06fed68eb3e5f503ac4a&id=9e3d96fb4a&e=06078890b2> program, the Citizens Committee awards micro-grants of up to $3,000 to resident-led groups to work on community and school improvement projects throughout the city. Applications are due January 26, 2015. The program prioritizes groups based in low income neighborhoods and Title I public schools. The grants support projects that address issues that communities identify as important to them - anything from community gardens to tenant organizing. Farmer & Holiday Market- December 13th
The South Bronx Farmers Market hopes to provide a platform for artists and farmers to sell great holiday items and gifts and support our local economy! They are inviting local farmers, food producers, craftspeople and artists to sell locally made products. Shared tables are just $25 (food producers must have insurance). DASH-NY Webinar: Local School Wellness Policy Rules 101 - December 15th

The Federal Healthy and Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 authorized the USDA to draft a new set of rules surrounding school districts’ Local School Wellness Policies. In this webinar, speakers Monica Chierici, MPA, Project Director of DASH-NY, NYAM and Kerry Griffin, MPA, Policy Associate, NYAM will present the USDA proposed rules and what they mean for school districts in updating their local wellness policies. The webinar will be held on December 15 from 10AM to 11AM.

Food Policy for Breakfast - December 16th
This session will focus on 80 Years of Federal Food Assistance Policy: Implications for Child Nutrition Reauthorization in Difficult Times. Jan Poppendieck of the NYC Food Policy Center<http://nycfoodpolicy.org/> will explore the factors that explain this relative success and then use this explanation to consider the prospects for Child Nutrition Reauthorization, now coming up in a Congress in which the GOP controls both houses. What can we learn from the history of food assistance that can help us prepare to make CNR 2015 a victory for America’s children? Learn to Ride with Bike New York - December 16th
Learn to Ride a bike Free, 2-hour classes are available for adults and mature teens that are ready to ride. Sports 4 Life Grant Program- December 17th
In October 2014, the Women’s Sports Foundation, with support from espnW, launched “Sports 4 Life” a new, national grant program to increase participation and retention of African-American and Hispanic girls in sports. Grants of either $5,000 or $10,000 are available to select applicants. Nonprofit organizations serving African-American and Hispanic girls ages 11 through 18 are eligible to apply. New York Yankees Holiday Food Drive- December 17th
Donate 30 lbs of non-perishable food and receive a voucher for 2 tickets to see the Yankees in 2015 (while supplies last). Bring food to Gate 2—located near the corner of 164th St and Jerome Ave. Rice and bottled water will not be accepted.

Grow to Learn Grant Writing and Garden Design Workshop- December 18th
Is your school planning to apply for the Grow to Learn Mini-Grant this fall? Join the Grow to Learn<http://www.growtolearn.org/> team to learn how to write a successful grant application and stay for the Garden Planning workshop to create your optimal garden vision. Gardeners should be prepared to show ID and use a metal detector to enter the building. Schools applying for a Mini-Grant in the February 11th round will be awarded 1 bonus point towards their application’s final review score by attending this workshop. New York City Community Gardening Coalition General Meeting- December 18th
Learn more about how to promote the preservation, creation, and empowerment of community gardens through education, advocacy, and grassroots organizing. Open to all!
The meeting will be held on December 18th from 6:30PM to 8:30PM at the Neighborhood Preservation Center, 232 E. 11th Street.

BRONX RE-IMAGINE Your Park, Community Parks Initiative (CPI) meetings – December and January
On October 7, 2014, Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver FAICP, announced the Community Parks Initiative (CPI), which is the first phase of NYC Parks: Framework for an Equitable Future. Through CPI, the Parks Department will immediately invest in local parks in NYC’s lower income, most densely populated, and growing neighborhoods. They will invest more than $130 million to rebuild 35 small community parks, including a commitment of over $110 million from Mayor de Blasio. The community parks selected for CPI all have great potential to better serve the areas around them, but have not had sufficient recent investment or stewardship to remain great public places. Department of Transportation (DOT): Bike to School Program-Application due January 7th
DOT's Bike to School program encourages students, families and educators to bicycle as a safe, healthy and fun way to get to and from school. Through the program, DOT works with schools and community groups to designate safe Bike to School routes, implement in-class curriculum and recommend street safety improvements. Participating schools, selected through an annual competitive application process, commit to the program for three years. Participation is a year-round commitment, as it includes a curriculum with in-classroom discussions of multi-modal transportation, helmet fittings and giveaways, bike rack installation, as well as special community-building and recreational events. Faith and Justice Clergy Breakfast- January 12th
Save the date for the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies for the next Faith and Justice Clergy Breakfast, which will be held from 9AM to 11AM at Riverside Church,490 Riverside Drive. This event is co-sponsored by the New York Theological Seminary.

Learn How to Join Your Community Board- January 14th
If you want a bike lane on your commute or a Play Street on your block or a speed bump outside the supermarket, your community board is how you make it happen. Transportation Alternatives Bronx Activist Committee and Bronx Health REACH are hosting a party to show you how to become a powerful part of decision-making process in your neighborhood. Enjoy snacks and drinks while you meet likeminded New Yorkers interested in joining their community board, learn about the application process and fill out an application on the spot! The event will be held on January 14th from 6:30PM to 8:00pm at the Bronx Museum of the Arts,1040 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY 10456.

Joan H. Tisch Community Health Prize- Nominations due January 23rd
Hunter College is seeking nominations for the fifth annual Joan H. Tisch Community Health Prize, a $10,000 award. This award was created to recognize one individual and one nonprofit organization in the New York metropolitan area for outstanding accomplishment in the field of urban public health. The nominee’s work should be focused on improving urban public health in areas such as: reducing health disparities; obesity/diabetes/nutrition; chronic disease prevention and management; environmental health; HIV/AIDS; health problems associated with poverty; healthy aging; mental health; substance abuse and addiction; public health policy and advocacy; and access, financing, and quality of care. The nomination packet requires several items including: a narrative and two reference letters.  Please submit nominations by January 23, 2015. Check out this new USDA interactive tool<http://nyc.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3dd407d8d8a355345c2ce5542&id=58e69d644f&e=35026f7f4d> for nutritious, budget-friendly recipes that can be scaled for families as well as large quantity recipes for a cafeteria. More than 400 of the large quantity recipes have been standardized by USDA and include information on how the recipe contributes toward the updated meal pattern requirements for school food service. Students, staff, and families can build healthy menus with a shopping list feature, customize a cookbook, or write a review.

The American Heart Association – EmPowered to Serve
