Research Intern
Description: This is a part-time, Research Intern position at The Family Center. The Family Center is a not-for-profit organization providing social and legal services to families affected by life threatening parental illness, absences and loss, with a strong focus on research. The Research Intern would work primarily on a study investigating the outcomes of an adult mentor on youth development. Other research related responsibilities also apply. The Research Intern will report to the Research Coordinator and work closely with other members of the research team. This position is unpaid but offers hands-on experience and is ideal for students interested in child and adolescent focused research.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

PROGRAM DIRECTOR: EDIBLE SCHOOLYARD NYC

BACKGROUND

Edible Schoolyard NYC (ESYNYC) partners with public schools to build gardens
and kitchen classrooms where children can engage in hands-on learning. The
objective is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and environment
required to change the way they eat for life.
In 1995, nationally acclaimed restaurateur and food activist Alice Waters
created the first Edible Schoolyard in Berkeley, California, pioneering the
notion that the best place to teach children the connection between food,
health and the environment is in our schools.
Established in 2010, Edible Schoolyard NYC is the first northeastern affiliate
of the program, and is committed to bringing the vision of a garden-based,
edible education to New York City.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The program director is responsible for the effective management of the
garden, kitchen, and community programs at Edible Schoolyard NYC’s Showcase
Schools, and the outreach programs of ESYNYC city-wide. The position reports
to Edible Schoolyard NYC’s Executive Director and serves as a member of
ESYNYC’s senior leadership team.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

RESPONSIBILITIES

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
- Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence and rigorous program evaluation.
- Ensure all program initiatives and activities are aligned with ESYNYC’s
mission and goals and that the program is of the highest standard.
- Effectively hire, lead, coach, develop, manage and retain all program staff
(teachers and outreach coordinators) in conjunction with the Director of
Education.
- Set clear, mission-focused strategic goals and metrics for all ESYNYC
programs.
-Ensure effective evaluation/measurement systems to track progress, and
regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be
effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents.
- Ensure ongoing excellence of Edible Schoolyard’s programming and continued
development of Edible Schoolyard NYC as a leader in this field.
- Set and manage program budget.
- Follow, identify and develop best practices to ensure universality,
excellence, and consistency throughout the program.
- Serve as a member of the ESYNYC senior leadership team, supporting the ED in
projects, expansion plans and program-related decision making.

KITCHEN AND GARDEN PROGRAM SUPPORT
- Work with the Education Director to execute internal professional
development sessions for program staff.
- Ensure an engaging and rewarding experience for staff; orient new staff to
ESYNYC and their responsibilities.
- Work with staff to identify yearly goals and development objectives and
manage staff to achieve those goals.

OUTREACH AND COMMUNITY
- Identify unmet needs and help expand the reach of ESYNYC to schools and
educators throughout NYC.
- Welcome visitors to the program.
- Participate in ESYNYC events and outreach efforts.
- Be an active presence in the school communities and attend meetings/events
as appropriate.
- Establish and maintain effective communication with ESYNYC staff, school
administrative staff, and the extended community; act as the main liaison with
school administration.
- Identify, develop, and manage mission-focused programs with partnership
organizations including but not limited to potential volunteer groups, other
non-profits, and food and/or garden organizations.
- Be part of a team that identifies expansion opportunities, new school sites,
and strategic partnerships.
- Take the lead on expansion projects and new opportunities, as agreed with
E.D, and manage program expansion to new school sites.

OTHER
- Coordinate all communications with ESYNYC DUMBO office and program staff.
- Provide logistical support and coordinate with ESYNYC’s development office
for all fundraising events and activities.
- Participate in ESYNYC staff meetings, staff development days and program
development meetings.
- Act as a spokesperson for the organization as appropriate.
- Support the Director of Education in external Professional Development as
needed (through participation, planning or other roles to be agreed).

QUALIFICATIONS

The Program Director will be thoroughly committed to Edible Schoolyard NYC’s
mission. A candidate with demonstrated knowledge of health, education and
public policy issues related to food and education is preferred. Candidates
should demonstrate an unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-
driven program evaluation. Concrete demonstrable experience and other
qualifications include:

- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Experience building collaborative partnerships in a diverse population.
- Experience managing staff and programs.
- Experience working in public school and/or educational settings strongly
preferred.
- Strong people skills and a positive attitude and outlook.
- Strong belief in ESNYC mission and social impact.
- Energetic, hard worker, with excellent organizational and management skills.
- Ability to think critically and to effectively deal with unique problems as
they arise.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to work with frequent interruption and to simultaneously supervise a
variety of tasks.

- Ability to travel between program sites & DUMBO office (time will be divided
between sites).

The Institute of Medicine’s Food and Nutrition Board is seeking a full-time Senior Program Officer to direct a 32-month review of the WIC food packages. The incumbent will be responsible for overall oversight and management of the project staff (program officer, research associate, and senior program assistant) and activities related to the conduct of the study, including a comprehensive evidence-based literature review; data gathering and analyses; and planning and conducting meetings and workshops for an ad hoc expert committee of approximately 16 members. She/he will have primary responsibility for the development of 3 reports from the expert committee, a short letter report to be released at 6 months, an interim report to be released at approximately 18 months, and a final report with recommendations to be released no more than 12 months following the release of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Job Description

Summary: The TCC/CKD Transitional Care/Chronic Kidney Disease Coordinator oversees the DCI Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Program. The primary goal of the CKD program is to delay the progression of kidney disease and the need for renal replacement and to best prepare the patient if the need for renal replacement arises. To accomplish this, the Transitional Care Coordinator will provide education to all partners in the care of kidney patients and coordinate services to transition the patient to renal replacement if needed. Key roles for the Coordinator will include:

Responsibilities:

This role requires substantial self-direction and autonomy, superior communications and teamwork skills, and a passion for improving the lives of CKD patients. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Identifying early-stage kidney failure patients and building relationships with them.
• Education of patients and families, education of healthcare providers throughout the delivery system.
• Evaluation of current disease management approaches and recommendations for change
• Development and maintenance of a database to evaluate CKD program effectiveness.
• Follows and coordinates care of the patient as he/she approaches the need for renal replacement through the first 90 days of renal replacement.
• Provide patient education throughout the hospital stay, including but not limited to, access care, limiting infection risks, fluid control
• Coordinates dietary instruction with Registered Dietitian
• Coordinates education with social worker to address emotional, adjustment, financial issues, insurance issues, employment issues, and other psycho-social needs.
• Coordinates vascular access placement if vascular or peritoneal access does not already exist.
• Medication compliance. The discharge medications will be reviewed with the nephrologists to ensure accuracy, with the patient to ensure understanding. The DCI Pharmacist will be available to assist with patient understanding and to apply for patient assistance programs if financial issues exist.
• Scheduling appointments with physicians, testing, other services, confirming the patient knows where to be, who to see, and has the means to get there
• Phone or home follow-up with new patients within 24-48 hours of discharge and at least weekly through the initial12 weeks of treatment. Each discharge plan is customized to the individual patient and identifies the resources and level of change that patients and their caregivers are willing to accept and execute.
• Collects and enters data for each patient to assess attainment of program goals
Reporting Duties:
• Provides a summary of activities to Administrator monthly
• Provides a summary of activities at the Governing Body meeting
• Works with other DCI Integrated Care Coordinators, sharing outcomes, activities and ideas, keeping the program within the standards set my DCI.
• Builds alliances with hospitals and other providers of care to renal patients
• When opportunities present, develops proposals for alliances with hospitals, insurers, and others entities with shared goals
• Observes strict confidentiality of patient and personnel information.
• Conducts self in a professional manner as demonstrated by appearance and attitude, by maintaining a clean and orderly environment, and by dedicating work time to meet patient and DCI needs.
• Recognizes and responds appropriately to emergency situations.
• Understands clinic agreements and contracts.
• Follows the facility attendance policy (absence and tardy).
• Displays a positive attitude toward patients, co-workers, physicians and DCI.
• Assists in meeting clinic goals.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
CKD Education coordinator responsibilities include:
• Education of health care professionals (hospital staff, nurse practitioners, case managers, etc.) to identify risk factors of CKD and understand referral opportunities for patients
• Education of patients and families in the community, identifying those at risk and following referral protocols. (Outreach)
• Educate patients and families about treatment options, including transplantation, home therapies, and incenter therapies. (individual and group education)
• Encourage transplantation as the treatment of choice
• Encourage early placement of fistula, regardless of treatment option chosen….

Main Responsibilities:
• Conduct food safety, brand standards and other on-site evaluations at customer locations, to assess workplace health and safety
• Consult, educate and train customers on latest food safety, health, and sanitation practices
• Partner with Ecosure&s Account Management team to solve customers& issues and assist in program rollouts
• Assist and support field service team members as needed to cover large assignments or vacant territories
• Perform activities that create a high level of customer satisfaction including the provision of accurate reports and effective customer communication and relationships
• Become a NEHA Certified Professional in Food Safety (CP-FS)
• Maintain professional credentials and remain knowledgeable on current state and federal industry regulations.
• Overtime will be required based on customer and business needs
• Nights and weekends will be required based on customer requirements. The specifics of the schedule will be discussed during the interview process
• This position requires completion of customer playground evaluations. EcoSure employees must be willing and able to complete hands-on inspection of playgrounds mimicking child&s play in the play structure (climbing, crawling in tight areas, going down tube slides, etc.)
• This position requires climbing steep indoor and outdoor one-story roof access ladders to complete roof inspections. EcoSure employees must be willing and able to climb steep indoor and outdoor one-story roof access ladders to complete roof inspections to confirm safety measures related to roof openings, electrical cords, and electrical outlets. Field Specialists are required to walk along the roof to ensure openings are clearly marked with fencing wire or plastic coverings, the roof is free of debris and use a circuit tester to check functionality of electrical outlets.
Location Information:

Successful candidate must reside: within 10 miles of Westbury, New York.

Cities included in this territory: Jamaica, Greenport, Rockaway Park, East Hampton, NY. Note territory alignments are reviewed on a quarterly basis and modified based on business need.

Percent of overnight travel required: Up to 25%

Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor&s degree with at least two (2) years experience in foodservice operations; OR Associate&s degree and four (4) years experience in foodservice operations
• Valid Driver&s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (2 years)
• Willing / able to travel overnight for business
• Ability to lift 25lbs (infrequent requirement)
