The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued draft guidance providing voluntary sodium reduction targets for companies that produce processed and commercially prepared food<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=995f81e22cf213ce26914de82650d0778edac1f876fec193dd6b7c74168ee116>. The guidance—which includes targets for two-year and ten-year reduction goals—covers approximately 150 categories of food. FDA will seek feedback on the draft via a public comment period.

The percentage of overweight and obese children ages 2 to 4 participating in Colorado’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program dropped 7.4 percent from 2012 to 2015<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=995f81e22cf213ceda23f40b7ca0e9a1960fc7597b76c3551c5f4b37b56d7456>, according to a report from the state’s health department. Nearly one in five Colorado children is enrolled in WIC, which provides healthy food, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and other services to low-income pregnant, women, infants, new mothers and young children.

Obese seventh-graders whose schools participated in a five-week program called Students for Nutrition and eXercise (SNaX) had lower BMIs two years later<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=995f81e22cf213cef272d8295ef68f016366dbe7f606dff15af15789f1819027>—an effect not observed among students in a control group whose schools did not participate in the program, according to a study published in Pediatrics. The SNaX program combines school-wide environmental changes and encouragement to eat healthier foods along with a peer-led education and marketing campaign.

Teenagers living in “disadvantaged” neighborhoods—such as those with higher unemployment and lower educational attainment, income levels, and housing values – are at elevated risk for obesity,<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=995f81e22cf213ceae041e16b5ac14a893666029be10e51fd5a8d73ce3c44805> with girls experiencing a larger impact from neighborhood disadvantage than boys, according to a study published in Social Science Research. Researchers also found that living in disadvantaged neighborhoods may have a negative effect on teens’ cognitive abilities.
