CALL FOR MORE SUSTAINABLE & EFFECTIVE PACKAGING FOR POWDERED NUTRIENT SUPPLEMENTS TO COMBAT MALNUTRITION

Scientists Without Borders, in partnership with The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at the New York Academy of Sciences, NineSigma, and DSM's not-for-profit nutrition think tank Sight and Life, are offering up to $25,000 for the most innovative ideas for more sustainable and effective packaging methods for delivering micronutrient powders (MNPs)<https://ams.nyas.org/nyasssa/ecmssamsganalytics.click_through?p_mail_id=E143416A4441614B1C28670>, small sachets of essential vitamins and minerals in developing countries.

[http://www.ninesights.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/73-1432-1098/259-149/2+%281%29.png]Every year, multi-lateral organizations, NGOs, and other entities distribute hundreds of millions of sachets of MNPs to tackle global micronutrient malnutrition. MNP packaging is designed to protect the nutrients from degradation but the packets are difficult to recycle, destroy, repurpose, or dispose of. We are seeking novel ideas for reducing or eliminating the ecological consequences of MNP packaging through innovative packaging materials and/or novel methods to deliver MNPs in a more sustainable and ecologically sensitive way that might also contribute to scaling-up their usage.

Submit your ideas by Sunday, September 30, 2012<https://ams.nyas.org/nyasssa/ecmssamsganalytics.click_through?p_mail_id=E143416A4441614B1C28670>

PARTNER EVENT:

October 11, 2012 (5:30 PM - 7:30 PM)
Medical Masquerade: A Case Study of Mercury Exposure from Seafood Consumption<https://ams.nyas.org/nyasssa/ecmssamsganalytics.click_through?p_mail_id=E143416A4441614B1C28671>
Presented by The New York Academy of Medicine

Although only a small percentage of Americans consume fish frequently (more than twice a week), they can incur health risks that are often unrecognized, in part because few studies have reported deleterious effects on adults. At this seminar Richard Gelfond will discuss his personal experience with methylmercury toxicity. Expert physician, Michael Gochfeld, MD, PhD will describe the clinical aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of methylmercury health effects in fish consumers drawing from his many years of experience. Nicholas Fisher, PhD will explain how mercury cycles in the environment and why all fish are not equal with respect to mercury contamination.

*Cost is free, but advance registration is required
